At least 17 children were killed in a fire at an Islamic school in Northern Nigeria.
Several other students were injured and rushed to health centers in the city of Kauran, Zamoda, Zamfara, for treatment.
It is believed that the fire broke out at a nearby house on Tuesday night and spread to school while the children sleep.
Local authorities and emergency responses were sent to the scene, but the fire had already led to significant victims.
Eyewitnesses Yahaya Mahi told BBC Hausa that the location of the school makes it difficult for those who try to stop the fire.
“Even if the firefighters had come on time, reaching the house would have been difficult because of the narrow road leading to the house,” he said.
Local employee Manir Hydara said other Islamic schools would be inspected to make sure they were not a fire risk.
“We will take action to prevent another appearance of this character,” he said.
The father of one of the victims told BBC Hausa that he was devastated, but his faith in God comforted him at that time.
