The channel in the suburb of the capital of Argentina Buenos Aires became bright red on Thursday, worrying the locals.
Photos and videos show intensely colored water that flows into the mouth, Rio de la Plata, which borders an environmental reserve.
Local media reports suggest that the color may be caused by the disposal of a textile dye or by chemical waste from a nearby landfill.
The Ministry of Environment said in a statement that water samples were taken from the Sarandi channel to determine the cause of the color change.
By the late afternoon, the color of the water has lost some of its intensity, AFP reported.
Residents claim that many local companies are disposing of toxic waste in the water road that runs through an area of leather and textile processing factories about 10 km (6 miles) from the center of the capital.
A resident, a woman named Sylvia, told the local C5N news channel that although it was now red, “another time was yellow, with a sour odor that gets us sick even in the throat.”
“I live a block of the stream. Today it has no smell. There are not many factories in the area, although there are warehouses.”
Another resident, Maria Dukoms, told AFP Industries in regional waste from disposal in the water and said she saw him color differently in the past – “bluish, a little green, pink, a little lilac, with fat on top”.
