A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake has hit the Caribbean, triggering tsunami warnings for a number of countries, US geological studies said.

Authorities say the earthquake epicenter is about 20 miles (32.1 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2 km) southwest of the Kayman islands.

A number of tsunami signals have been issued to the region, including the coast of Colombia, the Kayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Cuba.

The National Meteorological Service warned of potential dangers to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, adding: “strong currents and waves dangerous to those in or very close to water.”

The USGS has said that large earthquakes at this place are not unexpected on this place on the plate.

In 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake happened nearby, causing some damage and a little tsunami, the announcement said.

“Fortunately, the remote location of these earthquakes limits the potential for significant damage due to shaking,” he added.
