Power is gradually recovering in Sri Lanka after a national interruption of buildings, including hospitals that need to rely on generators.
Officials say it may take several hours to restore power to the island nation, but medical establishments and water treatment plants have been given priority.
Energy Minister Kumara Jayakodi has been reported to have accused the monkey of causing the power supply, saying that the animal had entered “contact with our network transformer, causing an imbalance in the system”, according to the AFP news agency.
The Ceylon Electricity Council (CEB) stated that the reduction of power supply is caused by an emergency in a substation south of Colombo and does not give more details.
“Engineers visit it to try to restore the service as soon as possible,” the minister said.
Ceb said “we make every effort to restore power to the entire island as soon as possible.”
Hospitals and businesses in the island of 22 million people use generators or inverters.
