A 14-year-old boy was killed and five people were seriously injured in a knife attack in southern Austria.

Police said the suspect was a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who was detained at the scene in Vilach, a city near the border of Italy and Slovenia.

Police are yet to establish a motive, but has participated in extremism specialists in the investigation, a spokesman told the BBC.

The incident took place around 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) near the city’s main square. Two of the five injured are in serious condition since Saturday night.

A delivery worker who drove his car to the attacker helped prevent more injuries, police said.

The driver – also a Syrian man – said he witnessed the attack while driving and deliberately stabbed the scissors.

The suspect was arrested shortly thereafter by two female police officers. As of Saturday night, he was still questioning, police said.

Some witnesses’ reports initially pointed out a potential second attacker, which caused police to rule out a train trip to the immediate consequences of the attack.

However, local police told the BBC that they were confident that only one knife was involved.

The Austrian law means that the attacker’s identity has not been released, but police have confirmed that he is a 23-year-old Syrian man who lived locally.

He had a temporary residence permission and was waiting for a solution for his asylum application.

Initially, police said four people were injured, but later fifth man came out with minor injuries.

The identity of the murdered teenager has not yet been revealed.

Governor Peter Kaiser of Carinthia, the region where Vilach is located, described the attack as “unthinkable atrocity”.
