BbcDonald Trump made many promises while running for president. He promised to reduce taxes, reduce prices, interfere with undocumented migration, raise revenue and strengthen the US industry with new tariffs and end wars.
Some of his proposals were described in detail by his political team or presented by Trump himself, in the videos “Program 47” on the website of his campaign. Others were offered, at first glance, outside the Trump style and openness, the “thought aloud” for the perception of ideas that others offered it to him.
In his speech to win on November 6, he made it clear that he intended to keep the promises that sent him back to the White House: “I will manage a simple motto: welcomed, promised.”
He became a slogan variety in his first month of service, which was marked by a blizzard of activities and remarkable progress in achieving some of his goals.
In areas such as immigration and foreign policy, Trump has widespread power to act unilaterally – and do it. In other areas, he faced legal challenges and political obstacles. Many of the other promises he has made will ultimately require congressional action under narrow Republican control to become permanent.
Here is a look at some of Trump’s “Day First” promises and his efforts to make them a reality.
What he said:
“When I win, I will immediately lower the prices, starting from day one.” August 2024
What did he do:
This is probably his biggest challenge, given how often inflation tops the list of voter priorities during the election campaign. In his opening address, Trump promised to “Marshal of the Huge Powers” of his cabinet to quickly reduce costs and prices, but it is not clear how. One way, according to him, is by increasing the drilling to reduce energy costs.
The aspiration of prices in January, the largest monthly increase in 16 months, complicates Trump’s task. He accused Joe Biden, who left his post on January 20, and democratic expenses. “I had nothing to do with it,” Trump said.
At other times, however, he admits that it is difficult for the presidents to control prices. But economists warn that some of its policies may nourish inflation and the poll suggests that voters would like to see it more.
What he said:
“On the first day, I will launch the biggest deportation program in American history to take out the criminals.” November 2024
What did he do:
Immigration may be Trump’s main focus from accepting power, with more than a dozen executive orders aimed at reviewing the system. His plan to deport foreign citizens in the country illegally, starting with those convicted of crimes, seems to be widespread public support.
But it is not certain whether he will fulfill his promise to deport so much. Several raids have made titles, but the number of people removed seems to be not a record, according to everyday figures.
In their first month of service, the US deported 37,660 people – less than the average monthly value of 57,000 removal and return in the last full year of Joe Biden’s administration, data obtained from Reuters show.
A DHS spokesman told the agency that the number of deportation of the Biden era is higher as illegal immigration is higher. National border meetings decreased by 66% in January compared to 2024, according to the White House.
What he said:
“I’ll watch J6 early, maybe the first nine minutes.” December 2024
What did he do:
True to his word, hours after the president’s oath, Trump issued pardons and commutations that made the way to release more than 1,500 people, convicted or charged with the US Capitol rebellion. A police officer who was struck that day told the BBC that the pardon was a “slap in the face”.
What he said:
“They die, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll do it – I’ll do it in 24 hours.” May 2023
What did he do:
Trump has begun the first negotiations between the US and Russia since the beginning of the war, but Ukraine swore to reject any transaction hatched without it, and there is an angry exchange between leaders. President Volodimir Zelenski fears that the President of the United States, who is fulfilling his promise for his campaign to end the war, but on the terms of Moscow and without guarantees of security. There is also concern in European capitals that they have been removed and Trump can dismantle some of the sanctions imposed on Russia as a punishment for the invasion.
What he said:
Trump told the NBC in December that “absolutely” plans to terminate the citizenship of the firstborn day on the first day: “If someone puts a foot from only a leg … on our land, greetings. Now you are a citizen of the United States. Yes, we are , we “will do this.”
What did he do:
In one of the first acts of his second Presidency, Trump ordered an automatic US citizenship, received from almost anyone born on US soil. Birth citizenship is not the norm around the world, and Trump’s movements are aimed at those in the US, illegal or temporary visas.
Opponents say the plan is hindering the law that has been established by amendment to the US Constitution nearly 160 years ago. And the question can be directed to the Supreme Court – the highest in America – after the Court of Appeal ruled against Trump, maintaining a legal block under its plan.
What he said:
“On January 20, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to load Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff for all products entering the United States and its ridiculous open limits.” November 2024
What did he do:
Trump announced on January 21 that on February 1, he would impose on his neighbors blanket tariffs, associating them to the flow of drugs and migrants in the United States. The president has long seen tariffs that are an import tax as a way of protecting the internal industry and increasing revenue. Canada and Mexico said they would introduce retaliatory taxes on US imports. But Trump delayed to start tariffs for one month after promises from both sides to increase the border implementation. In the markets and warnings of economic experts, there was also instability that these actions could lead to an increase in prices.
