At least 46 people were killed and other other wounded after a Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential neighborhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, the state media said.
Antonov’s aircraft came down after taking off from the Wadi Seidna military air base on Tuesday night, killing military officers and civilians.
The cause of the crash is unclear, but military sources were cited that this was likely to be a technical malfunction.
The crash came a day after the paramilitary forces of rapid support (RSF) – who was at war with the army – said he had removed a fighter in South Darfur.
The conflict has devastated large parts of Sudan – including Khartum and Omdurman – with thousands killed and displaced about 12 million.
The Ministry of Health said emergency teams rushed civilians, including children, at a nearby hospital after the plane crash on Tuesday.
A senior commander of the army in Khartoum was among the killed, says the Reuters news agency cited unnamed military sources.
Witnesses said there was a strong explosion and several homes were damaged when the plane came down, AFP reports.
The crash also caused power supply to the nearby neighborhoods, she added.
Sudan has been affected by a civil war since April 2023, when the army and RSF joined a vicious fight for power.
The war divided the country by controlling the army north and east, while the RSF holds the greater part of the Darfur area to the west and parts of the south.
In recent weeks, the army has been seizing parts of Hardum and the surrounding areas of RSF.
