Less 25 arrests were carried out during a World Operation against images of abuse of children generated by artificial intelligence (AI), said the EU EUROPHOPH EU Law enforcement Organization.
The suspects were part of a criminal group whose members participated in the dissemination of fully generated by AI images of minors, according to the agency.
The operation is one of the first to include such material for sexual abuse of children (CSAM), says Europol. The lack of national legislation against these crimes has made “extremely challenging for investigators,” she added.
The arrests were made at the same time on Wednesday, February 26th during an operation Cumberland, led by Danish law enforcement authorities, according to a press release.
Authorities from at least 18 other countries have been involved and the operation is still ongoing, with more arrests expected in the next few weeks, Europol said.
In addition to the arrests, 272 suspects have been identified so far, 33 house searches have been carried out and 173 electronic devices have been seized, according to the agency.
He also said the main suspect was a Danish citizen, who was arrested in November 2024.
The statement said he “managed an online platform where he distributed the AI -generated material he produced.”
After making a “symbolic online payment”, users from all over the world were able to get a password that allows them to “have access to the platform and watch how children abuse”.
The agency said online sexual exploitation of children is one of the main priorities of European Union law enforcement organizations that deal with “ever -increasing volume of illegal content”.
Europol added that even when the content was completely artificial and had no real victim, such as with Operation Cambland, “AI generated CSAM is still contributing to the objectivity and sexualization of children.”
EUROPOL CEO Catherine de Baso said: “These artificially generated images are so easily designed that they can be manufactured by persons with criminal intention, even without significant technical knowledge.”
She warned that law enforcement agencies would need to develop “new methods and tools to investigate” to cope with the emerging challenges.
The Foundation for Websites (IWF) warns that more sexual abuse AI images of children are produced and become more and more common in the open network.
In the studies last year, the charity found that for one month of 3.512 AI children, sexual abuse and operation were found on a dark website. Compared to one month in the previous year, the number of the most severe images in the category (category A) increased by 10%.
Experts say that AI’s sexual abuse material for children can often seem incredibly realistic, which makes it difficult to tell the real of the fakes.
