Meet the Anora sexual workers who are now looking at the success of the Academy Awards

When Luna Sofia Miranda approached Sean Baker at a strip club in New York in 2022, she tried to fascinate him.

But he “very obviously did not want to buy dance on the tour,” she says.

Miranda, who was 23 years old at the time, began to ask why he and his wife were there.

“I’m very worn,” she says. “So, I continued to ask them questions and finally took it out of them. They made a movie about strippers.”

She told them she studied acting and – after a successful audition – received a call on her 24th birthday to offer her a role in the movie.

This movie, Anor, is now regarded as one of the fronts that head to the Oscars on Sunday.

He is directed by Baker and Stars Mothers Madison, who is ready for the best actress for his role as a stripper in New York.

25-year-old Madison relies on real-life strippers to help her refine the part.

When she won a BAFTA movie award Last month, she dedicated it to the community of sexual workers.

“I was able to meet part of this community through my research on the film and this was one of the most amazing parts of creating the movie,” she said behind the scenes.

They “deserve respect and do not receive it often. And so I had to say something,” she added.

We talked to the actresses, strippers and dancers in the movie about their experience of working on it – and their thoughts about the finished product.

Some praised the film as realistic, especially in its depicting rejection and exhaustion that sexual workers often experience. But others said the movie was “limited”.

Initially, Eddie Tushet was not sure if he was involved in the movie.

The 21-year-old, who is British and appeared in Harry Potter, who spin fantastic beasts as a child, now lives in New York, where she is a student and stripper.

She was thrown like a background dancer at the anora after a casting agent noticed her at the club where she works. But Turquet said the night before the photos, she was discussing that she wasn’t showing up.

“I didn’t want to be part of a bad strip movie or something that does a favor for our industry, so I was worried,” she told me.

“Most stripper films are super supernatural or bad and operating.”

Eddie indicates the movie of 2020 Zola, as a waitress who goes to Florida for the weekend of undressing for fast money. “I found it hyperbolic, completely overdoing it, and it felt like talking to women,” she said.

“And don’t make me start with a nice woman who is angry, especially the idea of ​​a street worker played by Julia Roberts. Come on.”

But when Turquet realized that anora was a movie about Sean Baker, she changed her mind.

“His films are based on realism, he has a movie wall style I love,” she said. “So I was downloaded.”

Baker’s movies were also what attracted Lindsay Normington to the movie. The actress and stripper participate as Diamond, an enemy at Anora’s workplace.

She says she saw him at Afterparty about the movie premiere and went up to him to tell him he was a fan.

They contacted Instagram and months later he contacted her to tell her that she could have a role for her in a new movie. “I fell to my knees in my house,” Normington said.

The anorial movie offers a chance for a fabulous escape when he meets and falls for the son of a rich Russian.

Miranda, an actress and a stripper who plays Lulu, the best friend of the anora, says she was tasked with helping Madison sound like a real New York sex worker.

“I shared a PDF of language and jargon terms that only New York strippers will understand,” she said.

One of these words was a “whale”, which, explains Miranda, “is a client who is like a bottomless pit with money. He will do your night. And it won’t make you work very hard at all. “

The film also starred in the movie Kennady Schneider, a stripper and choreographer based in Los Angeles, who trained Madison to dance.

She says Madison installed a pole in her house in LA and the couple started working on her “sexy routine”.

“She put in so much work,” said the 28 -year -old Schneider. “She was so determined.”

Miranda said that many of the topics of the film, palpitations and rejection, are related to it.

“Sometimes I feel like this shiny toy that people want to play with. They go,” Wow, as if you are a stripper. You’re so cool. “And then they just put you aside and leave you,” she said.

“I think a lot about the end because I feel a lot like anore.”

Turquet agrees, calling the finishing “very relaxing and touching”, adding that it accurately depicts the strippers “exhaustion and fatigue” often feel.

“The sexual industry has a built -in trauma in it. It felt so real. It’s an incredible vulnerable industry,” she said.

“You are in danger every time you go to work. It’s a complicated and exhausting job.”

But in general, she said she had mixed feelings for the movie.

“What many strippers miss – and what’s starts the anora, but it doesn’t go far enough – is the moral question around the men who buy sex,” she said.

“This is the question of consent. Most of these films deviate from his answer or consider it.”

She said it also disturbed her that these characters “never exist outside their profession.”

“(Anora) is quite limited,” she said. “We never learn anything about her. The film takes the perspective of (male presenters) Igor and Vanya, determining who she is.”

“It’s better than any movie I have seen for him, but is ultimately limited as he was not spoken by a sexual worker,” she added. “I can’t wait as we tell our own stories and we hope it opens the door to it.”

For Normington, the film reflects the “uncertainty and competition and jealousy” that she has personally experienced in clubs.

“I appreciate not trying to be the most important movie for a stripper.”

Meanwhile, Schneider is the depiction of the movie of the world’s character hit the chord.

In the early scenes of the movie, we see the anorial work, talking with clients at the club.

We also see her and the other strippers on lunch break, eating from Tupperware boxes in the back room.

“I felt really accurate,” Schneider said.

“Many of the time in (stripper) movies you have a gloss, with money falling from the ceiling. These moments happen, but they are small and far between them,” she said. “This is a much more quiet bustle.”

When the anora came out, special screenings were carried out for sexual workers in New York and LA.

“This is the most beautiful applause I have ever received. I don’t know if this will ever repeat it,” Madison told us.

Now all the eyes are directed at the Oscars.

Miranda and Normington will attend. “It’s kind of stupid to think I’m going to the Oscars, but (at the same time) in the club I argue with a stupid man over $ 20,” Miranda said.

“I have the feeling that I live two lives.”

She said Madison was a “place” to say that the community of sexual workers is not receiving the respect it deserves, and said she hoped that the success of the anora would change that.

“I hope that if this movie wins an Oscar, it marks the beginning of a change in Hollywood, where sexual workers are respected as workers in their own areas, but also as entertainment,” she said.

“If this movie wins an Oscar, I want to see that.”
