The remarkable dress of Volodymyr Zelensky’s JD Vance in the Oval Cabinet on Friday has shown that the US Vice President is not afraid to take the central scene as a dog for attack rather than serve as some of its predecessors as a confident political disadvantage.
It was Vance who led the attack on Zelenski before Donald Trump joined the White House at a meeting that was a heartfelt, while the Vice President did not speak to praise the president to seek what he described as a diplomatic decision of the war in Ukraine-Russia.
“What diplomacy, jd, are you talking about?” said Zelenski, who was critical of direct conversations between Washington and Moscow. “What do you mean?”
“I’m talking about the type of diplomacy that will stop the destruction of your country,” Vance replied, and torn apart in the stunned Ukrainian leader.
“D -President, with respect, I think it is disrespectful to enter the oval office to try to challenge this to the US media.”
He also accused Zelenski of campaigning on behalf of the Democrats during the 2024 presidential election. The Ukrainian leader visited a ammunition factory in the critical condition of Pennsylvania’s swing last September and met with Trump’s rival Kamala Harris, in the White House.
The increase in Vance from Zelenski has attracted wide support among Republicans.
“I was very proud that J. he suggested that Zelenski had to resign.
Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville pointed to Zelenski as “that Ukrainian weasel”.
Congressman Mike lawyer from New York was more measured, saying the meeting was “missed the opportunity for both the United States and for Ukraine.”
Vance’s remarkable attack against a visiting head of state is not typical of the US Vice President.
Their job is often – but not always – to help election the president and then sit quietly on his boss’s side. To be a loyal lieutenant representing the president of foreign trips – to stand, a heart rhythm, so they say, from the Presidency.
The contrast with Trump’s first Vice President, the much softer mannier Mike Pence, cannot be bigger.
But Vance – which is widely regarded as serving to formulate the justification behind the instincts of Trump’s foreign policy – has long been frankly skeptical of the US help for Ukraine.
When he runs for the Ohio Senate in 2022, Vance said to a podcast: “I have to be honest with you. I don’t care what happens to Ukraine in one way or another.”
The Vice-President laughed at Trump as an idiot eight years ago, before a political evolution, which ended with the fact that he became an heir apparent to the movement of President Make America Great Again.
Despite Vance’s popularity among conservative voters, Trump has recently said in an interview with Fox News that it is “too early” to say whether the vice president will be next in a line that will run for president in 2028.
Vance seems to develop the role of Trump’s political quarrel, going even further than the president in his outspoken criticism of the enemies of the administration.
EPAOne common thread is that many victims of Vance language are the allies of America.
He started at the Munich Security Conference last month, a regular port for the US Vice President. Kamala Harris would often make unforgettable statements there.
But Vance uses the occasion to start a bubble attack on the state of European democracy, accusing continental leaders of censorship of freedom of expression and fails to control immigration.
“If you are running away from fear of your own voters, there is nothing that America cannot do for you,” he said.
The audience of politicians, generals and diplomats was horrified.
This was not the usual – and now it is widely accepted – an argument that Europe must do more to pay for its own protection and security.
It was a complete ideological attack-sign that the United States under Mr Trump did not only rotate from Europe, shifting its focus to security to China, but also seeks to encourage its own Trump-style populism on the European continent.
Not for anything that Vance did not have dinner after his speech with the leadership of the far -right AFD party in Germany.
His speech caused a reaction from European leaders, writers and scientists.
Still, Vance chose to take them online by joining a detailed X with several, including historian Niall Ferguson.
Vance accused him of “moralistic garbage”, “historical illiteracy” and – the worst of all – to be a “globalist”.
And if that wasn’t enough, Vance even chose to go to the United Kingdom Prime Minister in the Oval of the Oval Cabinet earlier this week.
From nowhere, he told Sir Cayer Starmer that “there are disorders of freedom of expression that actually affect not only the British – of course what the British do in their own country depends – but also affect US technology companies and, in general, American citizens.”
The prime minister backed away firmly, saying “in connection with the freedom of speech in the UK, I am very proud of our history there … We had a free speech from a very, very long time in the United Kingdom and that will last a very, very long time.”
It was a response from the criticism, which Vance, made in Munich, focuses on European provisions on platforms for artificial intelligence and social media.
The goal is to deal with the misinformation and speech of hatred that can ignite excitement and radicalize people. Vance sees him as a threat to the political colleagues and the trade interests of the United States, especially in Big Tech.
Several questions are presented. Was Vance’s attack on Zelenski intentionally, as some diplomats believe?
The White House sources told us not.
Vance’s new role appeared at Trump’s request, sharing the load with Elon Musk to throw away the punishment of the president’s opponents?
Or freelance Vance is already outlining a role that will be the basis of a pre -election campaign for three years when Trump will not be able to stand again?
Whatever the answers to these questions, Vance is emerging as more than just Trump’s number two.
