The impected South Korean president has been released from detention after a court in Seoul overturned his arrest for technical reasons.
Ion Suk Youol was released on Saturday to cheer from his supporters – but still faced a lawsuit on charges of uprising after his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in December.
He was arrested in January in the attack at the dawn at the Presidential Palace after a tense two weeks, where he resisted to be taken and there were clashes between his security and police detail.
But he left freely on Saturday after 52 days in custody. “I worship from my head from the people of this nation,” he said in a statement distributed by his lawyers after his release.
After waving supporters outside the center, he was expelled in an official convoy back to the Seoul presidential complex, where he was greeted by more supporters.
More than 50,000 protesters organized rallies in his support in the capital on Saturday, while there was a slightly smaller counter-protest, Yonhap reported.
G -N Yon’s attorneys provided his release after claiming it was illegal to detain him in custody. The courts agreed on the basis of a number of legal technical characteristics, although prosecutors define the decision as “unfair.”
It must be tested later this year for an attempt to put the democratic country under military status. It only lasted six hours – but polarizes the nation.
If convicted, he can face prison life or even the death penalty.
Although he is currently stopped by office, Jon Yon is still president of South Korea in the name.
He also faces a separate decision of the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to maintain his impeachment and formally undress him from office. The judges’ decision is expected in the coming days.
Despite the lawsuits, the supporters of G -N Yon gathered around him – and the authorities obey unrest.
