BbcMark Carney should be sworn in as the next Canada Prime Minister in the coming days after winning the competition to inherit Justin Trudeau.
This means that it will lead the ruling Liberal Party of Canada in the next election – which is expected to be called soon.
Several political leaders have called for a vote after Trudeau announced that he resigned as a leader of the Liberals in January.
But after US President Donald Trump imposed steep rates on the country, potentially igniting a trade war, opposition parties suggested that Canada should vote as soon as possible.
By law, the maximum time between the federal elections in Canada is five years. The next vote is officially scheduled for October 20, 2025.
However, there are several scenarios in which early elections can be triggered:
When Trudeau resigned in January, he stopped parliament, so the Liberal Party, which currently controls the government, may have a leadership race to find its substitute.
Carney, declared to replace Trudeau on Sunday, could have called the election earlier.
Pierre Polyver, who leads the Conservative Opposition Party, has already said he will call for a vote of no trust after parliament returns, as well as Jaget Singh, the leader of the new Democratic Party.
In the Canadian federal elections – as in the general elections of the United Kingdom – voters do not submit a vote directly to the Prime Minister. Instead, he is the leader of the party with the bigger part of the members of the parliament (MPs), who becomes prime minister.
This means that Carney will be on the move, along with poilievre and singh.
Four major parties will challenge the next elections – liberals, conservatives, new Democrats (NDR) and Block Quebecoa.
Liberals have been in power since 2015, when Trudeau was voted. They are currently occupying 153 seats.
Conservatives are the official opposition with 120 seats.
The Quebecoa block, which only runs candidates in Quebec province, has 33 seats, and the NPR has 24.
The Green Party occupies two places.
During the last stages of Trudeau’s Prime Minister, public opinion studies consistently show conservatives with a strong lead.
But the numbers tightened after Trudeau retired. Since then, Trump has taken office in the United States and introduced steep tariffs against Canada, which has increased expectations for a twofold voice.
There are 343 federal riding – also called constituencies or constituencies – Across the country. Everyone has a respective place in the House of Municipalities.
All places in the lower house, the House of the Municipalities, are ready to pick up during elections.
Senate members, the upper house, are appointed and not running for elections.
Like the United Kingdom, Canada has a “first time” electoral system.
The candidate who receives the most votes in each ride wins this place and becomes a MP. They do not need to receive the greater part of all the votes filed in their area. Other parties do nothing in this area.
The leader of the party with the largest number of elected MPs will usually form the government. The second ranked party usually forms the official opposition.
If no party ends with the majority of places, the result is known as a suspended parliament or minority government. In practice, this means that the party will not be able to adopt legislation without the help of other countries.
In order to vote in the Canadian election, someone must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and have evidence of identity and address.
