Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, the film production company behind franchises such as Matrix, The Joker and Ocean’s, has filed a request for bankruptcy in the United States, according to a filed court in Delaware.

The company accused its financial problems of legal battle with its former partner Warner Bros (WB) and “unsuccessful and expensive endeavor” in the production of independent films and television series.

In an attempt to mitigate some of its financial problems, Village Roadshow proposes to sell its vast movie library for $ 365 million (281 million pounds).

The company’s debts are believed to be between $ 500 million and $ 1 billion, according to court documents.

Village Roadshow and WB also produced a co -owner of dozens of films over the years, but their relationship was destroyed in early 2022 after the release of the most matrix movie – The Matrix Resurrections – on the HBO MAX streaming platform.

Village Roadshow claims that WB has excluded it from its rights to any sequel and prehistories of the films that the two companies have previously worked together.

“The WB arbitration has made the company impose more than $ 18 million legal fees, almost all of which remain unpaid,” said Chief Restructuring Keith Mayb in court.

This legal battle, according to Maib, is “irreparably MP work relations” between the two companies, ultimately completing the “most digestible Nexus” for the historical success of Village Roadshow.

The other issue faced by Village Roadshow was an expensive studio business, launched in 2018. None of the movies or television series independently produced as part of this endeavor is not profitable.

Like other film companies in the United States, Village Roadshow also struggles with the pandemic demand and the interruption of strikes by Hollywood actors and writers who began in May 2023.

In December, the Writers’ Guild banned its members from working with Village Roadshow because of the company’s supposed inability to pay its associates.
