Tesla got permission from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on Tuesday to operate a transport service in the state, the launch of a long regulatory street that can finally receive a robotaxi service there.
Permit, which Tesla applied in November 2024Does not cover autonomous vehicles tests or installations. And it is technically different than ride-hilling companies lift and Uber’s permits.
Tesla was given a TRansportation Charter PermitOr TCP. A TCP means the company-in the case of Tesla-vehicles owners and employees as drivers, according to the CPUC, which controls human-driven and driverless ride-helling services in the state. According to the Commission, a TCP is for companies that want to provide pre -made transport services such as roundtrips sightseeing.
Uber and Lift Hold Transportation Network Company (TNC) permit. TNCs use their personal vehicles to pay passengers to connect drivers to a smartphone app like an online-enabled app.
Tesla plans to use its TCP permit primarily to transport staff and transport employees to automaker owned vehicles. Tesla has agreed to notify the CPU when it moves to the transport of public members.
Importantly, the Tesla’s Application Commission’s autonomous vehicles cannot participate in a driver or driver’s power in passenger service programs. This does not mean that Tesla will not apply for those permissions in the end. If this is the case, Tesla should also get permission from the California motor vehicle department, which controls the autonomous vehicle test and establishment in the state.
According to state regulators, Tesla is not entitled to authority to provide any driverless journey from DMV.
Tesla is already planning to launch a Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. Tesla’s CEO Elon Mask has promised Robotuxi service It will begin using its own fleet vehicles in June which is equipped with its full self-driving software yet-free-published “obsolete” version.
