At the beginning of today’s call, Donald Trump made much of his conversation with Russian Vladimir Putin.
But the results look so there’s a little shout.
The Russian president has given enough leader to the United States to claim that he has made progress to peace in Ukraine without making it look as if it were played by the Kremlin.
Trump may indicate Putin’s promise to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for 30 days. If this actually happens, it will bring some relief to civilians.
But this is not close to the complete and unconditional cessation of the fire that the United States wanted from Russia.
“The very horrible war” Trump insisted that he could stop, still raging.
And Putin, A man accused as a suspected military criminal of the ICChas received a leg back to the highest level of global policy.
Russian state media reports that the telephone conversation of the two presidents has lasted more than two hours. The Kremlin reporting – his story of the call – is also long in 500 words.
He presents the conversation as a chat: they obviously discussed the hockey on ice, the type of detail that is an audience in Russia, will appear.
After three years, like Paria in the Western world and frosty relations long before, Russia has again dealt with the US administration that wants to engage.
The two leaders even discuss peace in the Middle East and Global Security.
The Kremlin must fight to believe the transformation.
Before the conversation, some wondered if Donald Trump could actually accumulate some pressure on Russia. After all, it is clear for more than a week that it stops for the cessation of fire.
But there are no signs of a bandage for Putin like the leader of Ukraine Volodimir Zelenski had to endure in the oval office two weeks ago.
The accounts of both sides suggest that nothing has changed.
Russia reiterates that it wants peace. But instead of grounding his drones and silencing his weapons, he is subjected to how still a non -existent termination of fire can be observed.
In the meantime, this adds even more conditions aimed at crippling Kiev’s ability to resist.
One request is that the flow of both weapons and intelligence to Ukraine by its allies must cease.
For the Ukrainians, the only hope is that the United States has not agreed to any of that – yet.
They can also point to the call as more proof that Russia has no interest in terminating its invasion.
But all this talk will bring minimal relief to Ukraine from his suffering.
For us, diplomacy should also be disappointing.
But for the Kremlin, it will feel like a pretty decent day, the kind of unthinkable before Donald Trump returns to the White House.
