The Sudanese army has seized the Presidential Palace in Khartoum by rival paramilitary forces for rapid support, military leaders said.

Videos and photos posted on social media and checked by the BBC Show Jubilant Soldiers, which wave their weapons, applaud and kneel to pray.

The army seems ready to regain control of the capital two years after being expelled from its paramilitary rivals, known as RSF.

The paramilitary group has not yet commented.

Khartoum is where the brutal civil war in the country began nearly two years ago and where some of its biggest battles are fought.

The RSF has kept the bigger part of the capital, as well as the western part of Sudan since the beginning of the war.

The recovery of Khartoum would be a huge victory for the Sudanese armed forces and a major moment in the conflict. In recent weeks, the army has also made profits in parts of Central Sudan.

On Thursday, witnesses reported explosions of drone and air strikes near the Republican Palace.

In a video on Saturday, RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeds, vowed to defend the presidential palace and the surrounding areas under the control of his paramilitary group.

He threatened more attacks in several northern cities.

A few peaceful efforts have collapsed as the rival forces the promise to continue to fight for control of strategic areas.

The war has caused the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the UN, with the RSF and the army accused of widespread violations of human rights.
