A fire in an electric substation caused the closure of London Heathrow Airport Friday causing major interruptions in travel around the world.
Heathrow, the largest airport in the UK and a global travel center, will remain closed until 11:59 pm on Friday, the airport said, with the interruption expected to influence hundreds of flights.
According to Flight Tracking Flights679 flights were designed to land in Heathrow on Friday, while 678 flights were planned to take off the airport.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesman told CNBC that the closure of Heathrow has “a significant impact on our flying program, both in and out of Heathrow.”
“All Virgin Atlantic arriving and departing flights are canceled by 9:30 pm on March 21, with the rest of today’s schedule is currently being considered,” an email statement said. “We kindly ask all customers not to travel to Heathrow or their planned departure airport or to contact our client center at this time and instead check their status of the flight on virginatlatic.com.”
Currently, air flights operated by Virgin Atlantic are redirected to other airports in the UK or return to where they took off.

The SQ318 flight from Singapore has been canceled, the spokesman added, as well as many of the planned deviations of the airline from Heathrow.
“SIA will provide all the necessary assistance to the affected passengers, including providing hotel accommodation, and compare them with alternative flights or land transport,” the spokesman said. “Other SIA flights between Singapore and London Heathrow can be affected.”
Emirates said On Friday, she canceled six flights in and outside Heathrow.
