The boss of Myanmar Junta Min Ang Chong He will travel to Thailand for a regional summit while his country cheered on an earthquake that killed thousands and left cities in ruins.
The earthquake in Central Myanmar last Friday died 3.085 people and wounds 4 715, Junta reported. Hundreds more are missing and the fee is expected to increase.
A spokesman for the Myanmar army said Min Aun Cobeng was planned to fly to Bangkok on Thursday, on the eve of a summit that will gather leaders from the seven countries border the Bay of Bengal.
His visit will be unusual, as sanctioned leaders are usually banned from these events.
The host Thailand, where the earthquake felt and killed 21 people, suggested that leaders issue a joint statement about the disaster. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka are also part of the summit.
Countries around the world have sent teams for help and rescue in Myanmar after the earthquake, but poor infrastructure and continuing civil war have complicated efforts to relieve relief.
Junta announced a temporary termination of fire Late on Wednesday to accelerate these efforts after rejecting the proposals from armed ethnic rebel groups earlier.
Previously, the military continued their air strikes in areas held by rebels, including those who were heavily affected by the earthquake.
On Tuesday night, troops opened fire in a Chinese convoy of the Red Cross, carrying auxiliary supplies. The junta said the troops fired after the convoy refused to stop, even though they had been signaled to do so.
Myanmar is covered by a bloody civil war because the military seized in power in 2021, which led to the rise of armed resistance that has been fighting with armed ethnic groups, some of which have been fighting the military for decades.
The years of violence cripple the economy, inflation with recharge and immerse the country in a humanitarian crisis.
Now the earthquake has worsened the crisis. Humanitarian groups called on the junta to raise all other assistance obstacles.
The UN also called on the global community to increase help before the monsoon season hit about a month.
