US President Donald Trump has provided a Tiktok 75-day extension to comply with a law that requires the extremely popular video application to sell its assets in the United States, or face a ban in the country.
“We don’t want Tiktok to” darken “. We look forward to working with Tiktok and China to finish the deal,” Trump wrote to Truth Social on Friday. The platform is currently owned by a Chinese company bytedance.
Trump’s first extension came into force in January and had to expire on Saturday.
The social media platform, which is used by 170 million in the United States, initially darkened several hours before Trump took office as the application was preparing to close in the United States after a law passed by Congress.
The Biden administration claims that Tiktok can be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation.
The Congress passed a bilateral law last year, which has given Bytedance six months to sell its control stake in Tiktok or see the US blocked app.
Opponents of the ban have cited freedom of speech as a reason for maintaining the platform open.
The new extension comes when the Trump administration is trying to make a deal to bring the US -owned social media platform and maintain the popular app to operate in the United States.
“The deal requires more work to ensure that all necessary approvals are signed,” Trump wrote.
The president also suggested that the US could offer a deal that agrees to approve of Tiktok’s sale in exchange for a relief from US tariffs for Chinese imports.
China is now facing a 54% tariff for goods imported into the United States and avenging 34% in counterparts.
Reports suggest that several potential Tiktok buyers have been cut in recent days.
Amazon presented a proposal for the last minute of the White House to acquire the platform, according to the US partner of the BBC, although the company declined to comment.
Several other potential buyers include billionaire Frank McCurt, along with Canadian businessman Kevin O’Liri. Alexis Ohanian, who co-founded Reddit, said he had joined Mr McCurt’s candidacy.
The calculating giant Microsoft, the private capital Blackstone, the Andreessen Horowitz Risk Capital Company, and the search engine’s bewilderment are also in a betting state.
Trump said his administration was in connection with four separate groups interested in a potential Tiktok deal, although he did not baptize them.
Speaking on Thursday, Trump said that “multiple investors” are closing in a deal.
