Rescue workers have released dozens of people from the collapsed building

At least 13 people were killed after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic.

Many others have been injured and rescue workers are still working to release people from the ruins.

It is not yet clear what caused the incident that happened in the early hours of Tuesday during a concert by the popular Merengue Rubby Pérez singer in Jet Set Discotheque in the capital, Santo Domingo.

The President of the Dominican Republic Louis Abbander has expressed his condolences to the affected families.

The director of the Emergency Operations Center (Coe), Juan Manuel Meandes, said they were still looking for people under debris.

He added that the ambulances made 93 trips to hospitals in the area, sometimes carrying more than one patient. Officials are still trying to determine the total number of wounded.

The preliminary number of killed is 13.

Méndez said he hoped that many of the burials under the collapsed roof were still alive.
