Former Facebook Global Public Policy Chief Sara Win-Wyliams testifies to the company’s relationship with China in front of the US Senate today.
According to Win-Wiliams, the company, known as the Meta, now worked directly with the Chinese Community Party (CCP) to reduce US national protection directly and betray American values.
He alleged that Facebook has created custom-bill censorship equipment for the CCP, which has given a “chief editor” over the content restraint that they can choose to completely stop the service of the Tianmenman Square massacre on a specific region or specified date.
Meta has denied the allegations of Win-Wiliam.
“Sara Win-Wyliam’s testimony is divorced from reality and is lying on false claims,” said Meta spokesman Ryan Daniels in a statement to TechCrunch. “Although Mark Zuckerberg itself was public about our interest in providing our services to China and the details were widely reported a decade ago, the truth is: We do not operate our services today in China.”
The testimony of Win-Wiliam was highly expected. In March, he published a book about his time on Facebook ”Inadvertent people: a cautious story of power, greed and lost idealismThe “
The day after the book was published, Meta won a Interim decision From an arbitration, which was said that the Win-Wiliams agency had left the company that he had signed a non-disintegration clause. However, Meta’s desire to limit the reach of the book seems to have the opposite effect – now, the book No.2 on the list of best sellers in New York Times Under non-imaginary.
Meta told TechCrunch that the arbitration order did not forbid him to speak to the Congress and the company did not intend to interfere with its legal rights. The company also says that it is not a secret that it is business in China.
At the end of Win-Wyliam’s term in 2017, Facebook launched a photo sharing app called Color Balloon in China, as well as launched an app called Moments. Meta mentions that it has been Report And in official filing, it reveals that it generates advertising from China, though services like Facebook and Instagram are banned there.
Per Mater’s own 10-K FilingIt has earned 18.3 billion dollars for 2024, which, respectively, in 2023 and 2022, more than $ 13.69 billion and $ 7.4 billion respectively.
Win-Wyliams claims that Meta’s relationship with the Chinese government goes deep.
He shared the documents with the Congress and showed some radical versions of these documents at the hearing of Senator Josh Howli (R-MO).
In an email, it appeared that Facebook executives discussed CCP access to the user’s data in China and Hong Kong.
Senator Richard Bloomantal (D-CT) said, “Democratic protesters seem to be willing to provide Hong Kong users’ data while opposing Beijing’s crackdown.” He said it.
“The censorship was developed as part of the equipment, there was a viral counter – so any part of the content received more than 10,000 views of the content, it would automatically trigger what was being reviewed to the chief editor,” he said. “Especially the surprise is that the virality counters have not only installed, but were activated in Hong Kong and Taiwan.”
Senator Bloomantal mentioned that Zuckerberg had previously denied that Facebook had created censorship equipment to enter the Chinese market.
Win-Wiliams has added that if Meta shares Chinese users’ data with the Chinese government from a technical point of view, he does not think that Americans who interact with Chinese users will have any way to avoid sharing user data.
He also claimed that Meta had shortened China about the development of various technologies in recognition of AI and facial.
“The biggest strategy that Mark Zuckerberg was pulling around was the American flag was folded around himself and called himself patriotic and he said that he was not serving in China, while he spent the last decade of business in Senate,” said Win-Wyliams Senate.
“And as we moved to the next era of artificial intelligence, he left the flag around himself,” he added.
