At least one dead in a helicopter crash on the Hudson River

At least one person is dead after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York, authorities said on Thursday.

The New York Police Department has said at least two people have been withdrawn from the water, although their condition remains unclear, an employee told CBS News, the US partner of the BBC. It is unclear whether the man who reports that dead was one of the two pulling out of the river.

The sea and land parts are at the scene of the crash, but it remains unclear how many people were on board.

A video circulated on social media shows some debris floating in the river.

The crash, which happened around 15:15 EDT (20:15 GMT), happened closer to the country of New Jersey on the Hudson River.

The location of the crash seems to be close to Pier 40 in New York.

Boat and street traffic in the area are stopped.

A BBC journalist, who was at the top of the World Trade Center during the crash, said there were about a dozen boats surrounding the site of the crash.

Tourists at the top of the building had gathered on one side of the tower to look at the scene of the crash, he added.
