The organizer of propalist protests at Columbia University has been arrested by immigration officials as he attended an interview as part of his US citizenship request, his lawyer says.
Mohsen Mahdawi, a green card holder to end next month by New York College, was detained on Monday in Colchester, Vermont.
The lawyer told him that Mr. Mahdavi was removed “in direct revenge” for his role in the demonstrations in the campus against the Israeli war.
Others who participated in the campus protests against the war, including Mahmoud Khalil of the University of Colombian University and Rumeis, have been detained.
The BBC has contacted US immigration and customs application (ICE) for more details on the case of G -N -Mahdaui.
A video shared on social media is obviously showing that it is accompanied by a car by two employees wearing police jackets.
His lawyer, Luna, says: “The Trump administration detains Mohsen Mahdavi in direct revenge for his intercession on behalf of the Palestinians and because of his identity as a Palestinian.
“His detention is an attempt to silence those who speak against the atrocities in Gaza. It is also unconstitutional.”
The lawyer applied to a Federal Court for a temporary restraining order to prevent US immigration authorities from moving Mahdavi of Vermont or expel him from the United States.
Judge William Sessions, appointed to Obama, quickly gave this order.
The court file says that G -n Mahdavi was born in a refugee camp on the west coast and moved to the United States in 2014.
He describes the basic philosophy as an engaged Buddhist who believes in “insubricity and empathy as the central principle of his religion.”
The location of G -n Mahdavi, who has kept us a permanent residual status since 2015, are unknown, according to the D -JJ Drowi.
Ghetto imagesMr. Mahdavi, who co-founded the Palestinian Student Society of Colombia, is an outspoken critic of Israel’s military operation in Gaza.
Last December, he interviewed the 60 -minute CBS program, accusing Israel of genocide, which he denied.
The detention of G -n Mahdavi comes against the backdrop of repression of immigration by President Donald Trump’s administration.
Last month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at least 300 visas for foreign students had been canceled in an attempt to cope with anti -Semitism in university campuses.
Critics say US officials are falsely accused of students in anti -Jewish fanaticism and violating their right to free speech.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders told X that G -n Mahdavi was illegally detained by the DVC during what was supposed to be the last step in the process of his citizenship. “
The Senator stated that “a proper process must be provided under the law and immediately released from detention.”
The judge sessions also held a hearing on Monday in the Rumes Ozturk case, a Turkish student at Tufts University of Boston, which was arrested by immigration authorities last month.
He asked whether the Trump administration would cause a “constitutional crisis” by not letting the student from custody if the court ordered to be moved from detention to Louisiana back to Vermont.
Meanwhile, Mahmoud Khalil’s attorneys are currently challenging the immigration judge’s decision on Friday, allowing the government to deport it as a risk of national security.
The protest leader at the University of Colombia was detained last month beyond his campus and transferred to a detention center in Louisiana.
