Ghana President John Mahama has stopped the country’s supreme judge – a move that marks the first in the history of the country.
An investigation has been launched and three undisclosed petitions have been filed, which are charged against Gertruda Torcorno, calling for its constant removal.
The main judges in Ghana enjoy the security of the mandate – which means that they can only be removed from office on several grounds that include incompetence and behavior.
The content of the petitions has not been publicly disclosed and she is just commenting, while the former Ghana General Prosecutor claims that her suspension is an attempt to undermine the judiciary.
“I think this is a complete charade,” Godfred Yboa said to the BBC.
“This is the largest attack on (the judiciary) in the history of the nation, the largest attack on the independence of the judiciary under the constitutional distribution of that country.”
Mrs. Torkornoo is the third female judge of Ghana and was nominated in 2023 by former President Nana Akfuf-Addo.
It is her responsibility to control the justice in Ghana.
According to the Reuters news agency, Mrs. Torkornoo had a request to eliminate earlier this year, when former President Akufo-ADDO said a request for dismissal had “several shortcomings”.
Copies of the three recently filed petitions against G -Ja Torkornoo were not initially available.
But some lawyers claim that retention of documents is a violation of the right of G -Ja Torkornoo to a fair hearing.
Subsequently, the copies of the petition were provided to the Chief Justice, which allowed her to respond to the allegations of private and in writing the charges.
Ms. Torkornoo will be invited by the five-member committee to respond to the petitions again before making a final decision whether it should be removed from office or not.
