A miniature dachshund was found alive and well after spending more than 500 days in the Australian desert.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue said it works “around the clock” to find the dog, Valerie, on Kangaroo Island, off the coast of Australia. It was last seen by its camping owners in November 2023.
Georgia Gardner and her boyfriend Joshua Fishlok had left Valerie for a moment in a toy in their campsite while the couple was fishing. When they returned, she was gone.
529 days of Valerie in the desert – surviving intense heat and avoiding poisonous snakes – was translated in part through the use of D -Ja Gardner’s T -shirt to create a “aromatic path” in a trap.
“After weeks of tireless efforts (…) Valerie was safely saved and fit and good,” Kangala said in a social media publication.
The charity said that the volunteers spent more than 1000 hours in search of Valerie, covering more than 5,000 km (3.109 miles).
Rescue efforts included monitoring cameras and a trap cell with a remote door system full of food, gardner clothes and some of the Valerie’s toys from the home.
Lisa Karan, director of Kangala, said she wore the remnants of G -Ja Gardner’s clothes as he approached Valerie after the dog was trapped and sat with her until the dog was “completely calm”.
On the initial days after Valerie disappeared, other camps spotted her under a parked car that shook the dog and sent her to escape to Bushland, The Washington Post reported.
Months later, locals on the island announced that they were seeing a pink collar that coincided with Valerie, much to the surprise of Jared Karan, another director of Kangala.
“Of all the dogs, this would be the last thing I would say that it will survive there, but they have a good sense of smell,” said G -n Karan.
In a 15-minute video on social media, Mr. and Mrs. Karan explained how the rescue of a “roller” happened.
D -Ja Karan said they have to wait while Valerie was in the right part of the trap and calm enough to ensure that he would not try to escape.
“She went straight to the back corner where we wanted it. I pressed the button and fortunately everything works perfectly,” said G -n Karan.
“I know people were a little disappointed, like” Why it takes so long? “But these are the things we did in the background,” he said.
Mrs. Gardner said on social media after Valerie’s long-awaited rescue: “For anyone who has ever lost a pet, your feelings are valid and never give up hope.
“Sometimes good things happen to good people.”
