Thirteen miners were found dead in Mina in Peru after being abducted a few days earlier.
They worked in a gold mine, owned by the Peruvian mining company Poderosa, which is based in Pataz province, north of the capital Lima.
The victims were sent to face a group of people involved in illegal production in the area, but were abducted by a criminal gang trying to get control of the mine.
The band kept them hostage in a mining shaft. In a week, they sent threatening messages to the miners’ relatives.
In the last few years, there has been a leap in criminals attacking mines in the country.
On Friday, the company – which employs 8,000 people – released a statement stating that it is disappointed that the police are not doing enough to prevent illegal yield.
“The climate of violence continues to escalate in the region,” the company said.
The Peruvian news website Diario Correo reported that a video distributed on social media – allegedly recorded by the abductors themselves – showed that the miners were executed in point scope.
It is not clear what prompted them to kill the group.
Since 2020, the illegal yield has taken on several mines run by Poderosa, forcing them to abandon some operations and “put at risk the physical safety of our employees and craft miners,” the company said.
In March, criminals working with illegal miners near the La Ciénaga Ravine in the Pataz area attacked performers in the mine, killing two people.
In the same month, the company also said that illegal miners blew a high -voltage tower, supplying energy to mines and tried to “invade” several mining objects. Poderos said the police and the army were unable to take control and called on the government to reimburse the order.
The company said illegal yield and organized crime are able to work with “absolute impunity”.
Peru is one of the biggest global gold producers, gaining more than 100 tonnes a year – or about 4% of the world’s annual offering.
