US President Donald Trump says he will hit movies made in foreign countries with 100% tariffs, As it increases trade disputes with nations around the world.
Trump said he authorized the US sales representative to launch the process to impose the fee, as the film industry in America dies “very fast death”.
He has accused “agreed efforts” by other countries that offer incentives to attract films and studios, which he described as a “threat to national security.”
“In addition to everything else, messages and propaganda!” Trump told his social platform for truthS “We want movies made in America, again!”
After returning to the White House in January, Trump imposed rates for countries around the world.
He claims that tariffs will encourage US manufacturers and protect jobs – but as a result, the global economy is chaos and the prices of goods around the world are expected to rise.
Before taking office, Trump has appointed three movie stars – John Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone – to be special ambassadors charged with promoting the Hollywood business opportunities, which he described as “a great but very embarrassed place”.
“They will serve me as special envoys in order to return Hollywood, who has lost a lot of business in the last four years to foreign countries, backwards, better, better and stronger than ever!” Trump wrote at that time.
The United States remains a major film production center worldwide, despite the challenges, according to the Prodpro research industry.
His latest annual report shows that the country saw $ 14.54 billion ($ 10.94 billion) for production costs last year. However, this decreased by 26% from 2022.
Countries that have attracted an increase in costs for the same period include Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom, according to the report.
Even before that, the latest announcement was influenced by Trump’s commercial policies.
In April, China said it was reducing its quota from American films allowed in the country.
“The US Government’s wrong action on abuse of tariffs for China will inevitably reduce the benefit of home audiences to American films,” the Chinese film administration said.
“We will follow the rules of the market, respect the choice of the audience, and moderately reduce the number of American films imported.”
Trump hit China with his rates most strongly, imposing taxes on imports of up to 145% of goods from there.
The administration told him last month that when new tariffs are added to existing ones, the taxes of some Chinese goods can reach 245%.
Beijing withdrawn with 125% imports of goods from the United States.
Other countries are currently facing the US tariff by 10%, while a high -higher break has leaked in July.
Speaking to reporters aboard the Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he meets many countries, including China, on trade deals.
However, he added that this week there is no plans to talk to his Chinese counterpart Jinping – despite the previous Reports that Washington has turned to Beijing about commercial conversationsS
Asked if any commercial agreements would be announced this week, Trump said it could be “very good” but does not give details.
