About 133 cardinals from around the world will gather in the Vatican City to choose the next pope, in a conclave, beginning on May 7th.

When white smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, the world will know that a new Pontiff has been selected.

The BBC looked back at the archival footage of the results of previous conclavi, from Pope Pius XII in 1939 to Pope Francis in 2013.
