Sotheby’s auction house has postponed its sale to Hong Kong from hundreds of sacred jewelry related to the remains of the Buddha after a threat of court action by the Indian government.
The sale of the collection – described as one of the most stunning archeological finds from the modern era – has caused criticism from Buddhist scientists and monastic leaders. India had said it offended the worldwide Buddhist community.
Sotebi said stopping would allow discussions between the parties.
A British employee named William Claxton Pepe opened the relics in northern India nearly 130 years ago, along with bone fragments identified as belonging to the Buddha himself.
The auction of the auction of the collection, known as the Piprahwa Gems of the historical empire of Buddha Maurian, the era of Ashokan, about 240-200 BC, was to be held on May 7.
In a letter to the auction house two days earlier, the Indian government said the relics constitute “the irrevocably religious and cultural heritage of India and the global Buddhist community. Their sale violates the Indian and international laws, as well as the conventions of the United Nations organization.”
The high -level Indian government then held discussions with Sotbibi representatives on Tuesday.
In an email statement, Sotbis said that in the light of questions raised by the government of India, “and with the consignment agreement, the auction … was postponed.”
It says that the discussion updates will be shared “as appropriate.”
A notice of the sale of precious stones was removed from his auction house until Wednesday and the page of the website promoting the auction is no longer available.
William Claxton Pepppé was an English real estate manager who dug the stupa in a pikov, south of Lumbini, the belief in the Buddha’s birthplace. He revealed relics inscribed and illuminated nearly 2000 years ago.
The findings include nearly 1,800 precious stones, including rubies, topaz, sapphires and gold sheets with colorful stored inside a brick chamber. This site is already in Uttar Pradesh.
In February, Sotheby had said that the discovery of 1898 was ranked “among the most unusual archaeological discoveries of all time.”
