Ghetto imagesThe fact that the conclave has ended quickly suggests that from the outset a significant number of cardinal votes believe that Robert Pressee is the one among them, which is best equipped to take the challenges that the Pope is facing.
At the beginning of the election – during the official meetings of the cardinals and informal dinners and cafes they had to discuss the type of person they were looking for – it was obvious that two words continue to appear, “continuity” and “unity”.
There has been recognition among many that Pope Francis has begun something extremely impactful, by reaching the living within the borders of society, to those of the periphery of the Catholic world, and also of those beyond faith.
There was appreciation for his endeavor to become a voice for the voiceless and to focus on the poor and those whose destinies were not in their own hands.
But it also made sense that a job had to be done to resolve (sometimes very public) divisions between those of different schools of thought within the church hierarchy, often characterized as traditionalists and progressive.
It was in this context that the name of Robert Presses began to be referred to as a serious contender. Like someone who supported Pope Francis behind the scenes, but who could still think of one of them.
But the voices church were set to look at not only what the institution and Catholic believers needed, but also what humanity needs a difficult intersection, with war and division of the background.
Again, Cardinal Proost – the American -Peruan double national, who is spoken of as much as at home with his peers in North America as with Latin America’s colleagues – is regarded as someone who can connect different worlds as a pope.
Pope Francis was sometimes criticized for a lack of ability to win more allies in the United States on major migration issues, climate change, and inequality, due to interruption of understanding the most effective ways to transmit his arguments to them.
For those who had in their minds that the basic requirement that was sought by a new pope was the ability to bring “continuity” and “unity”, during his speech on the balcony of St. Peter, Leo XIV gave strong clues why the cardinals chose it.
In his conversation about “Building Bridges” and people worldwide is a “one people”, he challenges Pope Francis’ echo and also talks about unity to the biggest extent.
In these early days, his past will be highly considered. His political views examined, his attempt to deal with abuse of dismembered, and his comments over the years on social issues have emerged.
Much of this is already in the public domain, so it can only be assumed that cardinal voters believe that there is nothing from a consequence to worsen its ability to lead the Catholic Church and to be the global moral voice they were looking for.
There are huge challenges ahead. But with a resolution after only four voices of a conclave, it begins with a strong mandate from the men they will need most through their papacy.
