BbcAt the end of the shift of the waitress, Christina Lumpert used her tips in two piles: Canadian money and an American.
But weeks have passed since she did it.
Loads, the restaurant it works in, is one of the first places that people can grab after crossing the border between the United States Canada between Sarnia, Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan.
The blue water bridge that connects the United States and Canada is a full view of the restaurant windows.

Port Huron is a production city with less than 30,000 people with a quirky center and a lot of retail trade, offering visitors a tempting opportunity for a day trip.

“We are 100% relying on the border trip,” she says on duty. “Our stores are often pillars of these communities; communities depend on them.”

And while the crossing of Port Huron-Sari is far better than most, on Friday through the mayy parking of the duty-freeness of Sarni is almost empty.
Tanya Lee, who runs the store with her family, says this has become the new norm.
On the Easter weekend – usually one of their most busy years, as the Canadians take advantage of the vacation to stop at a favorite restaurant and go to a church service at Port Huron – the cars were small and far between them, and sales were not as they should have been, she says.
“We are suffering from border damage,” says Mrs. Lee about her second-generation family business.
G -ja Lee notes that people who live in border cities often cross the border several times a week. For example, she has a mailbox in a delivery in Port Huron, which she visits regularly, as well as her neighbors.

People from the blue water bridge also feel the effects, says Mayor Anita Ashford.
She has also heard from residents of her city and Canadians, disappointed with the increased tension between the nations.
On a national scale, a 10% drop in Canadian tourism would cost up to the United States up to $ 14,000 and $ 2.1 billion ($ 1.56 billion) in business, according to the American Travel Association.
Michigan is one of the places that will probably see the weight of this impact. In 2023, visitors to Canada spent a collective $ 238 million in the state, according to tourism officials.
