The US-Canada border cities affected by Trump’s trade war

At the end of the shift of the waitress, Christina Lumpert used her tips in two piles: Canadian money and an American.

But weeks have passed since she did it.

Loads, the restaurant it works in, is one of the first places that people can grab after crossing the border between the United States Canada between Sarnia, Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan.

The border cities noticed almost instantly when US President Donald Trump began to impose tariffs on countries around the world and said he wanted to turn Canada into the 51st US State – because the number of Canadians crossing the border dropped.

Border crossings between the US and Canada have been declining by about 17%since Trump began to attract tariffs, according to CBP data.

Canadian automotive trips to the United States decreased by almost 32% compared to March 2024, according to Canada statistics.

Like many cities, which are launched along the border by 5525 miles (8 891 km), the economies of Port Huron and Sari are connected and somehow depended on each other. Port Huron is a production city with less than 30,000 people with a quirky center and a lot of retail trade, offering visitors a tempting opportunity for a day trip.

On a day where there is little traffic, a Sari resident can cross the border and be in Michigan for a few minutes.

Many of these cities were confronted with their first test more than five years ago, when the Covid-19 pandemic crossings left in 19 months and left local economies to exchange.

Now they are watching a second economic hit due to Trump’s trade war, with many Canadians choosing to buy Canadian – buying goods in Canadian – and reducing the trip to the United States in response to the disintegrating relations between the two neighboring countries.

One place that is felt is without the obligation of Sarni, the last place you can buy goods before you leave Canada and enter the United States. The shelves of perfume and alcohol are more full and the parking lot is more empty as the tension of the rates began.

Barbara Barrett, Executive Director of Association Frontier Duty Free Association, says some of the 32 free release in Canada had an 80% reduction in sales after Trump’s return to the White House. Most stores have observed a 50-60%decline.

“We are 100% relying on the border trip,” she says on duty. “Our stores are often pillars of these communities; communities depend on them.”

And while the crossing of Port Huron-Sari is far better than most, on Friday through the mayy parking of the duty-freeness of Sarni is almost empty.

Tanya Lee, who runs the store with her family, says this has become the new norm.

On the Easter weekend – usually one of their most busy years, as the Canadians take advantage of the vacation to stop at a favorite restaurant and go to a church service at Port Huron – the cars were small and far between them, and sales were not as they should have been, she says.

“We are suffering from border damage,” says Mrs. Lee about her second-generation family business.

G -ja Lee notes that people who live in border cities often cross the border several times a week. For example, she has a mailbox in a delivery in Port Huron, which she visits regularly, as well as her neighbors.

People from the blue water bridge also feel the effects, says Mayor Anita Ashford.

She has also heard from residents of her city and Canadians, disappointed with the increased tension between the nations.

On a national scale, a 10% drop in Canadian tourism would cost up to the United States up to $ 14,000 and $ 2.1 billion ($ 1.56 billion) in business, according to the American Travel Association.

Michigan is one of the places that will probably see the weight of this impact. In 2023, visitors to Canada spent a collective $ 238 million in the state, according to tourism officials.

This money is essential for border cities such as Port Huron, says his mayor.

“I hope the people in Washington will start to understand what they are doing to people,” she says. “We are not responsible for this, (the federal) government has put us in this position and now we have to deal with it with respect.”
