Former world -class cyclist, Rohan Dennis, received a two -year suspended sentence for an Australian car incident in which he killed his wife, his colleague Olympian Melissa Hoskins.
Dennis pleaded guilty to an aggravated census to create the likelihood of harm after Hoskins was hit by the car that drove during a battle in front of the couple’s Adelaide House in 2023.
A judge said Dennis had neglected the safety of her wife, but was not criminally responsible for her death.
Hoskins’ parents spoke out of court after the sentence, saying they were “joyful”, the case ended and hoped the family could “continue”.
Previously, the court had heard that Dennis and Hoskins argued about the kitchen repair shortly before the incident happened, and Hoskins held the car that her husband was driving while trying to leave.
While condemning Dennis, Judge Ian Press said he called the incident a tragic “really does not make justice of grief, grief and trouble that these events have put into the lives of those who knew and loved your wife.”
He said he realized that Dennis had tried to “de -escalate the dispute” by going, but said that it did not justify his actions.
“It was your duty to stop the vehicle when driving that the vehicle became dangerous for its physical well -being,” he said, according to a report by the Australian ABC Corporation (ABC).
“That you didn’t stop because you wanted to leave is a very bad reason not to do it.”
Hoskins was taken to hospital after being hit, but later died of his injuries.
Initially, Dennis was accused of dangerous driving, leading to death and driving without proper care and pleading guilty, but later acknowledged a smaller accusation.
Dennis’ lawyer claims that he does not intend to harm his wife and either does not know or is “reckless about the fact” that Hoskins is holding on to the car.
She told a more early hearing that despite her “stoic” front, Dennis felt “deep, deep sorrow”.
On Wednesday, Judge Press emphasized that Dennis was not criminally responsible for causing Hoskins’ death and accepted that he was concerned.
“I accept that you have a sense of responsibility for everything that has happened. I accept that you are fogging from what could be different if you acted in any other way,” said Judge Press.
In statements about the influence of the victim read last month, Hoskins’ mother said that while he accepted that Dennis would not be deliberate to hurt her daughter, his name was his “fall” and “must be addressed.”
Speaking out of court, Peter and Amanda Hoskins said they had missed their daughter “horrible.”
“She was really special,” said Hoskins.
He said the family was just going to get an apology from Dennis, but he expected “it would come with time”.
“Now is the time to continue, which would be Melissa’s expectations for us,” Mr Hoskins said, adding that it is important for the couple to have “well-mannered relationships” with Dennis forward.
“There are two young children caught in this tragedy … It is clear that we want to continue to be an integral part of () child life and their future.”
Hoskins was the world cyclist in the Australian team pursuit in 2015 and a two -time Olympian. Her death caused a wave of reverence from all over the world.
He and Dennis married in 2018.
Dennis retired at the end of the 2023 season after a cycling career in which he won the pursuit of the team of a silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012 and Bronze for a trial in Tokyo 2020. In addition, he won a gold medal at the community games in 2022.
