Volodimir Zelenski has accused Russia of “trying to buy time” to continue his war in Ukraine, a day after Donald Trump said the progress to end the fire was made on a call with Vladimir Putin.
“If Russia continues to offer unrealistic conditions and undermine progress, there must be difficult consequences,” writes the President of Ukraine on social media, adding that Kiev is ready to negotiate.
After separate calls with Zelenski and Putin on Monday, Trump said conversations on the ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine would start “immediately”.
Putin said he was ready to work on a “memorandum of a possible future peace agreement”, but did not addressed calls for a 30-day pause in the fight.
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova said it was “to make decisions” from Kiev and respond to the proposed memorandum of peace.
However, the Kremlin downplayed the proposals that the negotiations were close, with Russian state news agencies referring to spokesman Dmitry Peskov that “there are no deadlines and there can be no.”
In the meantime, Zelenski has launched a new round of diplomacy by talking to Western Allies in an attempt to increase support.
After a phone call with Finnish President Zelenski wrote on social media that Ukraine is working with partners to guarantee pressure on Moscow “forces the Russians to change their behavior.”
It came when the European Union and the United Kingdom announced that they had accepted new sanctions against Russia.
The EU said a black list of nearly 200 oil tankers in the Russian Navy of Shadows “warned of a” more stringed answer “if Moscow disagreed to a truce in Ukraine.
The United Kingdom has set sanctions with 18 more tankers as part of its package aimed at Russian military suppliers, energy exports and financial institutions.
There was a record attack of drones in Ukraine over the weekend, which KYIV employees described as the largest since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
On Monday, Trump said he would not join new sanctions against Russia, telling reporters that they could interfere with recent progress.
It came when heavy fighting continued on the front line, with Ukraine reporting 177 clashes and wanted over 1000 Russian victims in 24 hours.
Speaking before a meeting of EU ministers on Tuesday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistory said that the ongoing attacks of Russia “speak more strongly than the oral service we have heard so long.”
“Putin obviously plays for the time. Unfortunately, we have to say that he is not really interested in peace,” he said.
So far, Putin has rejected a joint proposal from the United States and Ukrainian for a 30-day termination of fire and last week rejected Zelenski’s invitation to meet for talks in Istanbul. Trump had offered to attend the conversations as to whether Putin would be there, but the Russian leader refused.
The Kremlin has previously announced temporary termination, including the 8-11 Mayto coincides with the World War II victory celebrations in Russia. Kiev declined to join, citing distrust and demanding an immediately, prolonged end of hostilities.
Like a 30-hour truce in Easter, he saw a brief lull in the battles, although both sides were accused of hundreds of violations.
Russia and Ukraine have been fighting since Moscow began a full -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
