The European Union offered a fee for fixing two euros to billions of small plots sent directly to the homes of the people currently coming from China.
The new tax would mean that packages worth less than 150 euros (126 British pounds) are no longer without customs.
Online markets are expected, including Chinese Giants Temu and Shein, to pay the fee, said EU Commissioner Maros Sefkovic.
Last year, 4.6 billion such plots entered the EU, with over 90% coming from China.
A similar volume has created a huge load for EU customs staff, Sephkovic said. He claims that this was challenging to ensure safety and the standard of entering the block that enters the block.
The proposed fee will “compensate for the costs,” he told the European Parliament. Brussels also hopes some of the generated revenue will go to the EU budget.
The two euro fee will apply to packages sent directly to users, while parcels sent to warehouses will be taxed at a lower rate of 0.50 euros (0.42 pounds).
This EU move comes after the US new Tariffs for Chinese goods Under the administration of President Donald Trump – which includes a fee for small packages.
Following the negotiations last week, the small package rate worth up to $ 800 (606 pounds) was revised to 54% of 120%. However, a $ 100 plot fee remains.
There were fears that the Chinese e -commerce giants could then flood the European market with cheap goods, as the products originally intended for the United States would have to be thrown elsewhere.
European retailers have complained before that they face unfair competition with overseas competitors who claim to not meet the strict standards of EU product.
Earlier, Shei and the Temu said they would cooperate with regulators and consumer standards. Temu says there are 92 million users in the EU until Shein said it has over 130 million.
Prior to US tariffs, platforms like Shein and Temu had relied on the so -called de minimis release to send low -value positions directly to customers in the United States without having to pay duties or taxes on imports.
