Elon Musk criticizes one of Donald Trump’s signature policies, celebrating a break from the US president, who helped win re -election in 2024.
Last week, the House of US Representatives was closely going through what Trump calls his “big, beautiful” bill that includes tax breaks with many billions of dollars and a promise to increase defense costs. She will now head to the Senate.
Tech Titan Musk told the US partner of BBC CBS News that it is “disappointed” by a plan that believes that it “undermines” the work that did for the president to reduce costs.
Musk was recorded as a king to reduce Trump’s costs – termination of foreign assistance funds in the United States among other projects – before announcing that he would back down.
“I was disappointed when I saw the mass bill on the cost, honestly,” Musk said in an interview with CBS on Sunday morning, a video of which was released by the television operator before the broadcast.
He continued to claim that Trump’s plan “increases the budget deficit and not just decreases it.”
Legislation is thought to increase the deficit – or the difference between what the US Government does and the revenue it receives – by about $ 600 billion (444 billion British pounds) in the next fiscal year.
In addition, the bill “undermines the work that the DOG team is doing,” said Musk, using the abbreviation of the consultation body to reduce costs, the Ministry of Government Efficiency.
Referring to Trump’s manager about the legislation, Musk told CBS: “I think the bill can be big or beautiful. I don’t know if it can be both.”
Musk’s intervention emphasizes the ongoing tension in Trump’s Republican Party because of the tax plans and the costs facing a restless passage through the house due to opposition to the different wings of the party.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval cabinet on Wednesday, Trump admitted that “he is not satisfied with certain aspects of him” while being “excited” by some aspects, such as tax reduction.
“This is the big, beautiful Bill,” he said. “And it’s beautiful because of all the things we have.”
Asked, Trump did not directly comment on Musk’s comments.
A long priority for Trump’s policy, the legislation promises to prolong the tax reduction of the taxes adopted during his first administration in 2017, as well as to provide an influx of money for defense costs and to finance the mass deportations of the president.
The bill also offers an increase to a 4TN debt ceiling – which means the amount of money the government can borrow to pay its bills.
Musk’s comments on the matter suggest a growing distance from Trump, which he helped to return to the White House last year with donations over $ 250 million.
They come after the billionaire has recently promised to retreat from Dodge. Musk said he wanted to help the government reduce 1TN in costs by canceling contracts and reducing government labor.
As of April, the Dog website claims about $ 175 billion has already been saved but The BBC analysis of this figure shows that it lacks some evidence.
Musk also said last week that he plans to make a “much less” political cost in the future and that he is committed to running a Tesla electric car company for another five years.
Tesla has faced protests, boycotts and a decline in sales over Musk’s work as Doge Chief, including his controversial efforts to release thousands of federal workers and restrict foreign assistance.
Musk defended his actions in his comments last week, saying, “I did what was to be done.” Previously, he and Trump justified the cuts as a matter of eliminating what they saw as fraud and abuse within federal costs.
