At least 110 people were killed in floods caused by torrential rain in Central Nigeria, officials told the BBC.
The rainfall lasted for several hours, said the head of the Niger Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abulahi Baba-Ara.
He added that “the growing flooded water was submerged and washed over 50 residential houses with its occupants.”
According to NSEMA, the areas of Tiffin Maza and Angwan Hausawa in the town of Mokki were the most affected.
The district leader of Mokuki, Mohammed Shaba Aliyu, said it had gone “60 years” since the community had suffered this type of flood.
“I ask the government to support us,” said aliyu.
This is the beginning of the rain season in Nigeria.
Many parts of Northern Nigeria experienced heavy rainfall and floods in 2024, which caused death, displacing people and destroying houses and infrastructure.
The country also suffered a serious flood in 2022, forcing about 1.3 million people from homes and caused more than 600 deaths.
