Ghetto imagesFrench President Emmanuel Macron has warned that the US and Europe are at risk of losing their credibility and being accused of “double standards” if they soon do not allow the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
He also appeals to Asian countries to build a new union with Europe to ensure that they are not becoming “secured” in the fight for power between the US and China.
Macron spoke during the Shangri-La dialogue, a high-level Asia summit held in Singapore.
Among the guests who listened were US Secretary of Defense Pete Heget, as well as senior military officials in the region.
Macron pointed out that if Russia could take over Ukrainian territory “Without any restrictions, without any restrictions … What can happen in Taiwan? What will you do the day when something happens in the Philippines?”
“What is embedded in Ukraine is our common authenticity that we are still able to preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of people,” he said. “No double standards.”
Many in Asia are worried about instability in the region if China is trying to “reunite” with Taiwan, a self -governing island that Beijing claims as part of its territory. China is also increasingly confronted with the Philippines over competitive claims in the South China Sea.
Later, Macron answered a question posed by BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner about Europe’s military role in Asia, while the full-scale war was still raging on the continent.
“If both the US and Europeans are not able to repair the Ukrainian situation in the short term, I think that both the US and the Europeans who pretend to determine any crisis in the region would be very low,” the French leader said.
US President Donald Trump has been increasing pressure on both Russia and Ukraine’s leaders to end the war and seemed to give Vladimir Putin a deadline. Trump also raised the Ukrainian leader Volodimir Zelenski earlier and accused him of not “ready for peace”.
Macron also made his point on the double standards of the Gaza war, admitting that there was a perception that the West had given Israel’s “free omission”.
He emphasized the importance of the work to end the fire and the mutual recognition of the Palestinian state, saying, “If we abandon the gas, if we think there is a free omission for Israel, even if we condemn terrorist attacks, we kill our own credibility in the rest of the world.”
He said it was “very important to be consistent and to follow our principles and rules”.
In recent weeks, European leaders have criticized Israel’s attacks to exacerbate the ever -designed humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a bladder attack against Macron and the leaders of Canada and the United Kingdom, accusing them of effective siding with Hamas and “on the wrong side of humanity.”
In the meantime, the United States has worked with Israel to invest the proposal to end the Hamas fire, while creating a very criticized model to distribute aid in Gaza.
Ghetto imagesMacron also uses his speech on Friday to sell his vision for “strategic autonomy”, where the countries defend their interests while working closely cooperation to maintain a global order based on rules that are not dominated by the superpowers.
He advertises France as an example that he is a friend of both the United States and China while guarding his own sovereignty and said that this model could be the basis of a new union between Europe and Asia.
“We want to cooperate, but we do not want to depend … We do not want to be instructed daily on what is allowed, what is not allowed and how our life can change due to one person’s decision,” he said, in what it seems is a veiled Reference to Trump or Chinese President.
He also made references to Trump’s global tariffs and the allies’ uncertainty to US security commitments, saying, “We can’t just stay sitting and say … what to do with tariffs, well, we’re not so sure that we have a full guarantee in the existing union, what do we do?”
“We want to act, we want to maintain our stability and our serenity and prosperity,” he said, calling for a “positive new union between Europe and Asia”, where they would ensure that “our countries are not secured to the imbalances related to the choice made by the superpowers.”
He noted that both Europe and Asia are increasingly intertwined and referred to the war in Ukraine, where North Korea helps Russia’s efforts with thousands of troops.
Ghetto imagesMacron said that in the past he objected to Western Alliance NATO to have a role in Asia, “because I do not want to participate in the strategic rivalry of someone else.”
“But what is happening with the presence of North Korea, along with Russia on the European soil, is a big question for all of us,” he said.
“So this is the reason that if China does not want NATO to participate in Southeast Asia or Asia, they must prevent clear (North Korea) to be engaged on European soil.”
Matteo Duchatel, director of international research at the Paris -based Montein Institute, said Macron’s comments on confidence are “implied criticism of the US policy of the US and a direct appeal to the United States to correct his diplomacy for Russia.”
Observers agree that China is likely to be angry with Macron’s speech, with Dr. Duhatel noting that the comments of the French leader to Taiwan are “the most distant he has gone” on the matter.
Some parts of Asia may welcome Macron’s message about strategic autonomy, given their concerns about the US and China’s choice, said Andrew Malak, a senior associate of the Asia-Pacific program of Washington-based GMF.
“His argument is that most of the rest of the world do not want to stay with this dichotomy and wants to collect some version of the global order – a number of countries in Asia would agree,” he said.
Among several European and Asian countries, said Dr. Little, there was a “real concern about how China would interpret a Russian victory” in Ukraine, while “Trump’s administration has a different view and is trying to make it a reading.”
He added that Macron’s mention of the recognition of a Palestinian state – to which France is a leader of European efforts – is to signal “we continue to this.”
