How to Make AI Faster and Smarter—With a Little Help from Physics

What exactly is the AI scientist – just fancy neural net?

It is not a single neural network, but a team of computer programs that can help scientists discover new. My group has already created algorithms that can help in individual tasks such as weather forecasts, identifying drivers of global temperature, or invented the effective relationships such as the impact of vaccination policies on disease infection.

We are now creating a wide “foundation” model that is versatile enough to manage multiple tasks. Scientists collect data from all types of devices and we want to include our model different types of data, names, texts, images and videos. We have an early prototype, but we want to be more extensive, more intelligent and better trained before the release of our model. This can happen in a few years.

Can you think what it could do?

AI scientific discoveries can practically assist in every step of the process. When I say “AI scientist” I really mean to an AI scientific assistant. For example, in an examination the literary survey phase usually requires a huge data collection and organization effort. But now, a large language model can read and shorten thousands of books at a lunch break. What AI is not good is to judge scientific validity. In this case, it cannot compete with an experienced researcher. Although the AI hypothesis generation, tests and data analysis designs can help, it still cannot conduct a sophisticated test.

How far do you want the idea to go?

As I depict it, an AI scientist can release researchers from some bitterness when allowing the creative aspects of science to manage the creative aspects of science. It’s something we are especially good. Assure, the goal is not to replace human scientists. I don’t imagine – I never want to see – a machine replaces or interfere for human creativity.
