Australia Minister of Defense Richard Marles has called on China to explain why there should be “such an extraordinary military accumulation”.

He said Beijing should provide more transparency and reassurance, as this is the “main question” for the region.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense of the Philippines Gilberto Theodoro, Jr., called China, “absolutely irresponsible and reckless” in his actions in the South China Sea.

The ministers turned separately to the reporters on the sidelines of an Asian summit held in Singapore.

China has not yet answered Marles or Teodoro.

Organized by the International Institute for Strategic Research on Think Tank, the Shangri-La dialogue has traditionally been anchored by the US and China, which collide for power in the region.

This year, China has sent a lower level delegation and defamed its speech. In the absence of a strong Chinese presence, the dialogue is dominated by Beijing’s criticism and questions posed by the United States and its allies.

On Sunday morning, Marles claims that “what we saw from China is the biggest increase in military capabilities and accumulates in a conventional sense from each country from the end of World War II.”

Not only the size of military accumulation refers to other countries, he told reporters.

“This is the fact that it happens without strategic reassurance. This happens without a clear strategic intention from China … What we want to see is strategic transparency and strategic reassurance from China and understanding why it is necessary to have such an extremely military accumulation.”

He cited Australia as an example of such transparency, noting that Canberra is publicly making its former defensive strategy and defensive reviews and makes “completely clear” that when they are building their defense, it is for Australia and Asia.

“So there is a complete strategic clarity and confidence provided by Australia to our neighbors, to the region, to the world. We would like to see that,” he said.

Answer a question to a A highly common Chinese military exercise Conducted near Australia and the waters of New Zealand in February, Marles said that although it was “destructive and we believe this could be done better”, “China acted in accordance with international law”.

“The leading light, the foundation here, must comply with international law. We continue to talk about it is the order based on the rules.”

Marles was also asked about the call of heget for the Indo-Pacific partners to increase defense costs as an overhanging part against the threat from China.

Marles said, “We are actually taking steps this time … We understand it, we’re ready for it.” US President Donald Trump has called on Australia to increase his costs to 3%, but Canberra is still publicly engaged in this issue.

Marles added that some of these costs would fall under Aucus, Pact to Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to build a nuclear -energy fleet.

He said the projects under the pact are “on the way” and he is “very optimistic” about progress, including more visits to US submarines to Australia and rotations through a first -based basis.

In a separate interview with the BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, the Minister of Defense of the Philippines Theodoro said China was “absolutely irresponsible and reckless in the appropriation of most, if not all, from the South China Sea and the world cannot tolerate it.”

The two countries have repeatedly faced their competitive claims in the South China Sea, and the Philippines complain of aggressive and violent tactics from the Chinese coastal security.

He has called for the maintenance of the international order, saying that “the extraction of many defense ministers is that Europe and the United States must continue to lead” on this.

“It was the call of the Philippines. This is the call of Lithuania, Latvia, the smaller countries that have a way of life that appreciate the freedom and dignity of man.”

“And with a lifestyle that we do not want the deep state to look through our shoulders or to be scared of what we say,” he said, referring to China.

On Saturday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Heget had warned of China’s “forthcoming” threat to Taiwan And accused Beijing of becoming a “hegemonic power” in the region.

China vigorously attacks heget in two separate statements, the most recent being published on the Foreign Ministry’s website at the beginning of Sunday.

It says heget has “abused China with defamatory allegations and falsely called China a” threat. “

“No country in the world deserves to be called a hegemonic force other than the United States itself, which is also the main factor undermined peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Earlier at the meeting at the top of the defense, French President Emmanuel Macron had made a step Europe to be a new ally of Asia.

China also responded to Macron, who compared Taiwan’s defense with Ukraine’s defense and said the comparison was “unacceptable” as “the Taiwanese question is entirely China’s affair.”

China claims that a Taiwan, a self -governing island, as its territory and has not ruled out the use of force at the end to “gather” with it.
