The US Supreme Court is blocking a case brought by Mexico, which seeks to be responsible for US weapons for playing in the role of the country’s struggle with drugs.
The court voted 9-0 to reject the case, in the 2005 proceedings, which protects the manufacturers of weapons from responsibility, if the weapons they produce are abused.
The Mexico government claims that the “flood” of illegal weapons across the border is the result of “deliberate” practices from US companies, which they claim to have appealed to the cartel members with their products.
The decision overturns the decision of the lower court, which allowed the case brought against Smith & Wesson, as well as other producers, to continue.
The case is the first time the court has taken the Shield Act known as the Law on Protection of Legal Trade in Weapons, or PLCAA.
At the hearing in March, the court seemed skeptical of Mexico’s challenge, with judges on both sides of the ideological spectrum questioning the validity of the case.
