FCDOThe United Kingdom agreed with a deal with the European Union on Gibraltar status after Brexit.
Talks about the rules governing the border between Spain and the British overseas territory have continued since the United Kingdom left the EU in 2020.
The United Kingdom said the agreement would avoid the need for inspections for people and goods crossing the border of Gibraltar Spain.
For travelers arriving at Gibraltar Airport, passport checks will be carried out by Gibraltar and Spanish officials.
Spanish border officials could deny entry, as it would be possible for British arrivals to continue their journey to Spain and the EU free travel area without further inspections.
This is similar to the system that exists for Eurostar passengers at the St Pancras London Station, where travelers pass through the British and French passport control before embarking on international trains.
The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lamie said the deal was protecting British sovereignty and supported the Gibraltar economy.
He said that the Breakthrough has provided a practical solution, adding: “This government inherited a situation from the last government, which puts the Gibraltar economy and the way of life under threat.”
Gibraltar Minister Fabian Picardo also welcomed the agreement, saying: “I worked a hand in a glove with the UK government during this negotiation to deliver the deal that Gibraltar wants and needs – the one that will protect future generations of British Gibraltari.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the United Kingdom Prime Minister Sir Kayer Starmer agreed to a phone call on Wednesday night that the deal “unlocks significant opportunities to strengthen the United Kingdom relations.”
Downing Street said Sir Keyer also called Picardo to congratulate him on the deal and thanked him for “the years of hard work, commitment and guidance for reaching an agreement.”
Gibraltar is a head of 2.6 square miles south of Spain.
The United Kingdom has been sovereignty over Gibraltar since 1713, although it is contested by Spain, which claims the territory for its own.
The status of the territory and that of its border with Spain are a key point for gluing and remain unresolved after Brexit.
Approximately 15,000 people cross the Gibraltar Spain border every day for work and free time.
Currently, residents of Gibraltar can pass through residence cards without having to print their passports. Spanish citizens can pass using a government ID.
But there were concerns that this would end with the introduction of EU Login/exit system later this yearcausing huge border delays.
The United Kingdom said all countries have agreed to clause, clarifying the final contract, it does not affect the British sovereignty of the territory.
It says there will also be full operational autonomy of the United Kingdom military facilities in Gibraltar, where the airport is managed by the Ministry of Defense and hosted the RAF basis.
Public opinion in Gibraltar, which has a population of about 32,000, is about the preservation of British sovereignty. The last referendum, held in 2002, saw almost 99% of voters reject a sovereignty sharing proposal with Spain.
The breakthrough came after Lamie met with Picardo and his cabinet in Gibraltar earlier, before the couple headed for Brussels for discussions with the EU and Spanish ministers.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and EU Trade Chief Maros Sefovic welcomed the deal as “historical”, with Sephkovic saying that he “reinforces a new chapter” in the EU and the United Kingdom.
All countries have committed themselves to finalizing the text of the Treaty in the UK and the Gibraltar EU as quickly as possible, said the United Kingdom government.
However, the UK reform criticizes the deal, with deputy lider Richard Tis saying: “Once again, this Labor Government has shown complete disregard for our overseas territories. This is another show.”
The conservative shade’s foreign secretary, Pritt Patel, said her party would look at the full legal text of the contract to see if it corresponds to their “red lines”.
“The conservative party in the government, and now it has always been clear in opposition that every transaction must ensure that Gibraltar’s sovereignty and rights are fully protected and have to bear the support of the Gibraltar’s and the people of Gibraltar, as well as to protect the constitutional arrangements. We also consistently opposed the spain.
“Gibraltar is British and is referring to Laburi’s recording of our territory and paying the privilege, we will carefully review all the details of each agreement reached.”
Liberal Democrats Foreign Affairs spokesman Kalum Miller said the agreement approached the United Kingdom “a step closer to the right trade deal with the EU”, but added that “it is vital for parliament to provide the opportunity to study the details.”
