AFP via Getty ImagesThe leaders of some of the largest countries in the world have descended on a luxury mountain lodge nestled on the rocks of Canada for this year’s meeting at the top of the G7.
Elite gathering comes when Western allies face numerous crises, from conflicts on three continents to global economic instability.
Canada chaired the G7 this year and will host leaders of Italy, USA, France, Germany, Britain and Japan in Cannakas, Alberta. He promised a set of rationalized priorities focused on the global economy and security.
But Mark Carney’s carefully planned program has already been assigned by the conflict in Israel-Iran.
This is his first major international gathering as the Canadian Prime Minister.
Here are five challenges ahead.
This summit was defined as a test of his ability to achieve three sublime goals, which he advanced to Canada – occupying a leadership role on the global stage, becoming the strongest G7 economy and wearing the US addiction.
Now the issue of Iran is suddenly shot at the top of the G7 program, subject to the finding agreement will be complicated.
But one thing is clear. Carney will be carefully monitored on how he handles US President Donald Trump, who often undermines Canada’s sovereignty.
John Kirton, director of the G7 research group at the University of Toronto, says he will start control from the arrival ceremony, where he will have to show that he treats Trump as equal. And keep it under control when the meetings are underway.
The summit offers the potential to secure some Canadian victories, perhaps a new trade and security deal with the US, hatched last month in Washington.
At this meeting, Carney gave the president some golf equipment from the country club Kananaskis, a picturesque course within the strictly controlled perimeter of the summit.
A carnet has already had a noise of one with one of his colleagues in the UK, Australian, German and South African counterparts over the weekend.
The summit is held against the backdrop of a global trade war, which began with Trump, which uses tariffs as a way of balancing trade relations. He said the United States was “plundered, robbed, raped and looted by nations near and far, both a friend and an enemy.”
It also comes as the World Bank predicts that the world economy will see the slowest decade of growth from the 1960s, since the effect that is felt in the US tariffs, which is likely to have some uncomfortable – or “honest” in diplomatic lings – conversations of this family gathering.
A discussion about the world economy will start the summit on Monday morning.
But the choice of Trump in November the elections displaced the global program outside the trade. The gathering offers President a chance to provide victories on some of his other priorities, such as migration, critical minerals, security and drug trafficking – they are all on the agenda later during the day.
The president has met with each of his G7 colleagues since he took office, but he will organize meetings one on one on the sidelines-he already has Karni in his diary for Monday morning.
This will be Trump’s second time in Canada as the US president, the first being a diverging summit in Charlevoi, Quebec, in 2018, shortly after he hit the steel and aluminum rates in Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Charlevoix was memorable for completing aggression and disorder – captured in an already known photo of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, confronted with challenging Trump, as other world leaders and assistants looked like.
Federal Government/EPAThe leaders were struggling to agree on the language for global trade on the final communication – a moment captured in that image of Merkel – before Trump left the summit early.
He headed for Singapore to sit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un while posting missions from Air Force One, aimed at then -Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Many of the tensions from seven years ago remain current today.
Carney hopes to avoid such derailment and told Sky News last month that the lesson he took from this blast should be consistent – say the same in private, say the same things after the summit, as well as during the summit. “
The G7 is a “consensus body. We work together,” said a senior civil servant at Canada at a briefing last week.
With this in mind, Canada has chosen to avoid the final communication entirely in favor of six short joint statements about wild fires, critical minerals and other key agenda elements.
Canada’s Priorities for Confab are sharply focused on building stronger economies and strengthening peace and security, including the use of artificial intelligence and strengthening critical mineral supply chains.
Although there are no extensive commitments to climate change, he is integrated into the agenda, said a senior civil servant at a briefing this week, indicating efforts to improve the international joint response to the growing global threat of forest fire.
The oldest season of fire in Canada was a record in 2023. And this year it could be on its way to be the second oldest. The flame smoke has covered parts of North America and Europe and can be a visible reminder of the Delegates in Cannaskis for the threat.
Ukraine is another urgent top of the agenda, with President Volodomir Zelenski hoping to discuss constant support for his country, sanctions against Russia and future funding for efforts to recover.
Tuesday morning will focus on this conflict, with Ukraine expected to insist on more sanctions against Russia.
Carney also stacked foreign intervention – more special intervention in the global communities of the diaspora – high on the agenda of the meeting, creating the potential for intense discussions with some of the present leaders who are not part of the G7.
As a host, Canada also invites leaders who are not constantly attached to the seven-member group, and Carney has given a number of nod to attend, some more controversial than others.
As mentioned, Zelenski will be there and is expected to sit one with Trump.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be a guest, with Carney saying that there are important discussions that India as a major economic power must be part.
Modi’s visit comes against the backdrop of deeply strained relationships between the two countries because of the murder of Sikhist separatist leader of Canadian soil.
Canada accused India of committing the fact that two years ago was aimed at killing Hardep Singh Nijjar and the invitation to the G7 received a reaction to some Sikhin Canadians.
The President of Mexico, Claudia Shainbaum, has confirmed that he will be in Cannaskis and expects to sit with Trump for the first time.
Her presence laid the basis of conversations about trade in North America, which was increased by Trump’s rates.
Carney has also invited European and NATO leaders, as well as those from Australia, South Africa, South Korea, Indonesia and Brazil.
