Niger’s military junta says this will nationalize most of the local French uranium company in the last escalation between the two countries.
Somaïr is managed by the French nuclear fuel company Orano, which Niger accuses of several “irresponsible actions”.
After seizing power in 2023, Niger’s military leaders said they wanted to maintain more local control over the country’s mineral wealth and distance themselves from France, the former colonial power, approaching Russia.
Niger is the seventh largest uranium producer in the world and has the highest class of Rudy in Africa.
“This nationalization will allow for a more healthier and more sustainable management of the company and therefore the optimal pleasure of the wealth of Nigens mining resources,” the Junta said.
Orano has not commented yet.
The company, which has operated in Niger for decades, owns a 63% share in SOMAIR, but last year the military authorities seized operational control of the company.
According to the Reuters news agency, Orano, which is owned by the French state, has launched lawsuits against Niger for its actions.
Niger achieved independence from France in 1960 and the former colonial authorities were able to provide exceptional access to Niger’s supply to various agreements.
Analysts say this was seen by many in Niger as a symbol of the country’s continued dominance of France.
They also note that any uncertainty with regard to the future of the mining sector can threaten hundreds of jobs as well as export revenue.
Earlier this week the neighboring Mali announced that he was building a Golden Refinery in partnership with Russian conglomerateS
Like Niger, Mali is under military control and says he wants to uphold more economic control over his mineral wealth, while reducing ties with France and the West.
