Nvidia wants in on the nuclear renaissance, invests in Bill Gates-backed TerraPower

TerrorBill Gates established and supported nuclear startup announced a new $ 650 million fund this week. The investment will help the company build its first commercial power plant.

Like the other nuclear startups, the terrapawar has a rose Wave Hypersiscola, data center developer and now from chip designers. Nvidia’s initiative, the arms, the nephews, the first energy investment were identified and participated in the round.

Bill Gates and HD Hundai, both have already invested on the cap table.

Terpawa started the first power plant in WiMing in June 2021. The company itself does not have approval for the reactor, though it is expected to get a permit some time next year. Due to the gentle attitude of the Trump administration towards the atomic, the timeline seems reasonable.

When complete, the first furnace of the terrapower will produce 345 MW of electricity, a medium ground between today’s huge conventional reactor and tomorrow’s promised small moduler furnace.

The Natrium furnace of the terpwar is cooled with water not by water. The Natrium design uses a lot more sodium than needed to cool the reactor. It is through design: When the demand is low, the reactor can continue to operate, heating sodium that is later stored in large tanks.

When demand increases again, steam turbines can draw heat from stored sodium. Since nuclear power plants are not easily ramps up and down, it allows the Natrium reactors to continue to operate.

The storage system is designed to produce 500 MW of electricity for more than five hours, helping to fill the solar and air production gap.

The startup had previously followed a different reactor design, which it expected to end in the mid -2020. However, after mounting uncertainty, it has changed the way to follow the current Natrium design.

Terpawa claims that it can complete a furnace within three years of poured the first batch of concrete for the reactor. Nevertheless, it requires enough site preparation and construction before it happens.

And though there are signs that the first Natrium reactor would be cheaper than the recent US reactors, it won’t be cheaper: Associated Press reported last year that the bill could arrive $ 4 billionWhose half of the power can go to the shoulder by the section.
