Every company needs people who strategize how to improve operations as well as people which they performS But at startup, where staff and resources are limited, “you have no luxury of having strategies and to perform people,” says Jain.
Everyone should be able to “understand the problem,” she says, Plus, “You should also be able to enter the weeds, to understand the solution, to write it yourself, to bring it into the world.”

To get out if the candidates can both go and roll up their sleeves, Jain asks for a problem they had in a company and how they solved it.
“The level of detail that someone can enter, as it refers to the process, not just supplies, tells you a lot about how much they were,” she says. If they can explain exactly the steps that are needed to solve the problem, they probably have made these steps themselves – and could do it again to solve the problems in their next company.
The other element Jain is looking for in the applicant’s response is their attitude. “If they are excited on both sides,” she says, “it’s always a really good sign.” They will carry this level of enthusiasm to achieve things forward.
