US President Donald Trump has signed a Memorandum, which will impose more Cuba restrictions.
This move is aimed at reversing some of the measures introduced by the Biden administration, which has eased US pressure on the communist country.
The White House said it would impose an existing ban on US tourists in Cuba and would oppose the calls of international organizations such as the UN to end the US economic embargo on the Caribbean nation.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said the memorandum “strengthens aggression and economic blockade, which punishes the entire Cuban people and is the main obstacle to our development.”
In a sheet of facts published on his websiteThe White House said this would end “economic practices that are disproportionately beneficial for the Cuban government, military, intelligence or security at the expense of the Cuban people.”
US citizens are now forbidden to travel to Cuba solely for tourist activities, but there are 12 categories of trips that are permitted, including family and educational educational visits, humanitarian projects and sports competitions.
The new memorandum says that compliance with the existing policy will be implemented through regular audits and “mandatory records of all transactions related to travel for at least five years”.
It also prohibits US citizens from doing business with GAESA, a conglomerate run by Cuban military, which own many of Cuba hotels.
Tourism is one of the main sources of a solid currency for the Cuban Government, but the number of visitors has decreased as the shortage of the Caribbean island has become more severe and several national cuts of electricity have immersed it in the darkness.
The memorandum emphasizes that President Trump is “committed to encouraging a free and democratic Cuba, turning to the long -standing sufferings of the Cuban people under the communist regime.”
The policies listed in the document upgrading measures that Trump has implemented in his first office of service, as well as in recent months.
Shortly after he swore in a second term, Trump restored Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, which had been canceled just days earlier by then -President Joe Biden.
Trump and his iron policy towards Cuba had strong support from the Cuban-American community in the United States.
The decision of Trump’s administrations to terminate the temporary protective status (TPS) for the Cubans – as well as for Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelatsi – was met with a widely disappointed Cuban -American.
