Liverpool led the stands to Jota, saying that the club was “devastated” by such an “unimaginable loss”.
He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and the League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.
The club presented further statements later on Thursday, with Boss Slot paying tribute to a player who became the “loved one of all” at the club.
The Dutchman added, “Someone who made others feel good about themselves just by being with them. A person who took care of his family.”
Slot said he had last talked to Jota to congratulate him on Portugal, won the People’s League and wished him luck for his wedding.
“In many ways, it was the dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes even more heartbreaking that he should finish like that,” he added.
Slot said that Liverpool and their supporters are “everyone with the Jota family and” the same can be said for the brighter family of football. “
Reds captain Virgil Van Dick said he was a “privilege” to play with Jota and be his friend on the field.
“We will miss us beyond words and we never forget you,” the Dutchman added. “Your heritage will live, we will see this.”
Left back Andy Robertson said Jota was “the most British foreign player” he met.
In a publication on Instagram, Scotland International added: “The last time I saw him was the happiest day of his life – his wedding day. I want to remember his endless smile from this magical day. How much he burst out of love for his wife and family.”
In a statement from the owners and the club’s leadership group, John Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon, said, said they were left “numb with grief” as they offered condolences to the Jota family.
They added: “Beyond the player, whom we all knew was a wonderfully humbly human being, he was sincere, intelligent, fun, difficult, and created relationships with people wherever he went. He had a lifelong fervor that was completely infected.”
Liverpool Sports Director Richard Hughes and Football CEO Michael Edward said: “This is a tragedy that goes beyond the Liverpool football club.
They added that the club would seem to honor the Jota with the “respect and attachment” that deserves in the coming days, but so far “expresses a love that is filled with deep grief and pain” after losing someone “truly irreplaceable.”
