Russia the first to recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan

Russia has become the first country to officially recognize the Taliban rule, with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaki calls it a “bold” decision.

He met with Russia’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhhirov, in Kabul on Thursday, where Girnov officially handed over his government’s decision to recognize Islamic Emir of Afghanistan.

Russia was one of very few countries that had not closed their embassy in Afghanistan in 2021 and told Telegram that “expanding dialogue with Kabul” was crucial to regional security and economic development.
