In an interview with Dr Los Angeles Times Looking back on his seven years at the helm of Sony Pictures, outgoing CEO Tony Vinciquerra spoke of the studio’s successes as well as its disappointments during his tenure. This includes the final film to be launched while he is still the boss: Kraven the Hunter.
D Spider-Man villain spin-off “Probably our worst launch in 7 1/2 years,” starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. [I’ve been at Sony]So it didn’t work very well, which I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film,” he said.
In a follow-up question, more was asked about Vinciquerra Requirements-As well as another infamous, Spidey-related 2024 release: Madam Webb.
“Let’s just touch on that Madam Webb For a moment,” he said. “Madam Webb Underperformed in theaters because the press just crucified. It wasn’t a bad film, and it did great on Netflix.”
He continued to blame the press Madam WebbIts failure and others. “For some reason, the press decided they didn’t want us to make these films requirement And Madam WebbAnd critics just destroy them. They did it too poisonBut the audience liked it poison and made poison A mass injury These are not scary pictures. For some reason they were destroyed by critics in the press.”
(MorbiusReleased in 2022, not mentioned.)
In Rotten Tomatoes, Kraven the Hunter Has a 15% “Tomatometer” rating from critics; Movie fans gave it a 73% on the “Popcornmeter” scale Madam WebbIts ranking is even worse (11% from critics; 55% from fans); When the most recent poison movie, Venom: The Last DanceThere was the greatest agreement between critics and audiences (41% vs. 81%).
Still, just because fans who vote on Rotten Tomatoes may have positive feelings, that doesn’t necessarily translate to box office gold. most recently, Kraven the HunterAs Vinciquerra himself admitted, Didn’t leave much of a mark at the box office.
The outgoing CEO probably doesn’t have to think too much about it, but he must be aware that the whole “Spider-Man The spin-off” strategy, which Sony embraced so enthusiastically in the beginning, needs to be re-examined going forward. “I think we need to rethink it, because it’s snakebitten,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “If we throw out the other, it will be destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.”
Spider-Man 4At least, there is on the horizon: Tom Holland returns as the web-slinger in the Dustin Daniel Crayton-directed film, coming July 24, 2026.
