Bradley Murdoch, the Australian man, convicted of killing British backpack Peter Faconio in 2001, died.

The 67 -year -old Murdoch was serving a life sentence in a prison in Alice Springs, in the northern territory of Australia.

In recent weeks, he has been treated at a hospital in Alice Springs for terminal cancer.

The Department of Amendments to the Northern Territory told the BBC that there was a man’s death in custody.

In 2005, Murdoch was sentenced to the murder of G -N Faconio, but had never revealed the location of his body.

The Falconio was shot dead on a remote section of a highway near the northern city in Barrow Creek, about 300 km (186 miles) north of Alice Springs in July 2001.

The 28-year-old was traveling through Australia with his girlfriend Joan Lais, also from the United Kingdom, at the time.

Murdoch was also convicted of the Dj -Ja Laye abduction and attack attempt, who was able to escape by hiding in Outback Scrub for a few hours before he could signal help.

Murdoch was 43 when he committed the crimes.

The test partially inspired the horror movie of 2001 Wolf Creek.

Last month, police in Australia have announced a new award up to $ 500,000 (£ 240,000) for information leading to the opening of the remains of the murdered British backpack.

Commander -in -chief Mark Greve of police in northern territory told a press conference at the end of June: “Police still have hope that someone may be able to provide some vital information to help with this search.”

“We recognize the passage of time that has happened, but it is never late to contact and start this conversation with the police,” Griev said.

He said that at this press conference, police had “made many approaches” to Murdoch, including in June, but said “unfortunately … in any case, he chose not to deal with the police.”

Commander Greve, who acts as he wanted to “try and at least bring some resolution to Peter’s family, bringing home the remains home” – and said they had spoken to their family about the award.
